Fumble recovery myth

I always here coaches and announcers say "do the smart thing and just fall on the football". You know how many times I've seen a big lineman try and jump on the ball and it squirts under his body and gets away from him? Sometimes scooping is actually the better way to secure the way. Plus if you dive on it, it guarantees a huge scrum for the ball.

What about near the sideline?

If the defense tries to pick up the fumble but fails and it goes out of bounds the offense keeps it.
Better then to still attempt a scoop or fall between ball and sideline?

I'd just let the other team recover it.

Too much can go wrong if the defense tries to recover.
