If I were an NFL owner I would stop paying those opting out of

Jul 29, 2020, 11:39 AM

playing this season and go to replacements. I enjoyed the games played by the replacements used back in the 1987 season. Most of these players were not in it for the money. They were in it for the love of the game. I thought it was great because of many teams ran simple offenses from the past.

If the NFL uses replacements again I may actually watch an NFL game.

Some players have decided not to report to camp or play next season for very good reasons. I know one player has decided to forego the season because his wife is pregnant. That’s the right thing to do. imo

Those players actually are getting paid much less for this season. I believe they will be paid $150,000 if they opt out, and $350,000 if they're opting out due to being at a high-risk health wise. That's still a lot of money, but much less than many of those guys are making if they play.

As far as the 1987 season and the replacement players. Were they really playing for the love of the game, or because it gave them a chance to play in the NFL for any type of money at all while giving themselves a chance to make more if they made a name for themselves? It's not like if you offered any of those guys 20 million to play that they were going to say no thanks because being able to play football was the only payment they needed.

While true...

I think the point is, for the vast majority of them, the money, at least initially, was not the primary motivating factor. It likely had more to do with playing for a NFL team and possibly garnering enough attention from coaches/scouts to parlay that into an opportunity to earn a spot on a team after the strike.

I doubt it was money for most players if they had a pretty good job. I think they played 8 games and cleared $4000 per game. 8 x $4000 = $32000. On 87 that seemed like a lot of money but some of this guys left good jobs that paid more. Randy White am NFL regular crossed the picket lines because he was going to lose $30,000 a week! That’s big time money.

When the strike was over the replacements were basically run off the teams premises. The teams tried to sell them any clothing they wore. How cheap when all these owners are making millions of dollars.

NFL boycott all over. Seems keeping up with pro football may be wasting your time.
