Do any of you have experience ripping up carpet

and salvaging the wood floor underneath? I have evidence (read as I pulled back the caper around the vents and saw it) that the wood under the carpet matches in 3 rooms matches the rest of the house. In one room there are 3 spots that squeak something awful when we step on them.
What horrors await when I rip this stuff up. How prepared should I be to have to give up on the wood floor idea and get some mid grade carpet?

PIA to remove. I scraped it off ~600sf of concrete slab this past winter, and it was horrible. Not sure I'd DIY that on a wood floor

this terrible carpet. Before we moved in the plan was to rip it up. I even got the staple removers. Simply ran out of time.

scut work like that back in the early 80s. Well, we did rip up the carpet in the condo we bought, but there wasn't anything under it but padding and plywood.

Hardwoods underneath ended up having to go too. Needless to say security deposit wasn't refunded.
You may have different results.

Maybe 30% chance you'll need to put carpet back donw.
Probably lots of scrubbing up some sort of stuck-padding residue.
Maybe refinishing, but maybe not. I only refinished 1 room, and it was a small one. I sanded it with an orbital sander, stained and urethaned.
The other rooms, I just ripped the carpet up, clean up the floors and called it good.
