Ostarine article from triathletes

Dec 25, 2018, 2:08 PM

In summary, Ostarine is probably an impurity in some dietary supplement they are taking.

Unlike pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements are not required to be tested for impurities.

Also note that the testing mentioned in the article stated the lab called around 7-11 ng/mL or 7-11 ppb a trace amount... not the 0.2 ppb the NCAA supposedly detected ... an order of magnitude less.

Didn't the NCAA set a precedence with Bama testing...

Dec 25, 2018, 2:15 PM

two or three years ago. I remember one of Bama's players failing a drug test and the NCAA accelerating the process and the player being allowed to play.

yes they set a precedence with Bama testing...

Dec 25, 2018, 2:16 PM

but the precedence was not extended to other teams

0.2 ppb? Wonder what the Method Detection Limit is?***

0.2 PPB is an incredibly small amount

Dec 25, 2018, 2:27 PM [ in reply to 0.2 ppb? Wonder what the Method Detection Limit is?*** ]

1 PPB is the equivalent of one drop of water in an olympic swimming pool.

That makes 0.2 PPB the equivalent of one drop spread out over 5 olympic swimming pools.

Hopefully, the retest on the B sample clears the guys.

I was interested in your math on this

Dec 25, 2018, 3:08 PM

So since I'm at work on Christmas I decided to check it out.
There are 591.471 drops in an ounce.
128 ounces in a gallon.
So, I'm getting about 13,208 gallons.
Olympic-sized swimming pool is about 660,000 gallons.

All that math was just out of curiosity, but there is some perspective needed. A healthy testosterone level in men is about 2.4 to 9.5 PPB. When it comes to hormones or drugs of this nature, small numbers can be significant.

It has a 24 hour half life, so if they tested at 10 ppb after a race where they took the contaminated salt pills, they would test at 0.16 ppb after 6 days.

The half life only tells part of the story for detection

Dec 25, 2018, 2:43 PM

The test will look for the metabolites of the drug. Half life is a measure of how long the actual chemical is in the body. This will naturally be relatively short, so testing for it is not useful. What is tested for is the chemicals into which the drug will be broken down - metabolites. These will remain for much longer.
