Needing to clear the air seems problematic

Would imply distractions have been a dime a dozen. Not to mention, if you are not misleading then you don't have air to clear. I find it annoying. It also seemed like the only clearing of the air was to the current players as individuals. No mention of owing anything to Clemson. What am I missing here?

Absolutely, he seems to have been totally upfront with Dabo and Clemson University on his activities or lack of activities. He doesn't owe me any explanation either. He wants to be a head coach and will be IMO.

"if you are not misleading then you don't have air to clear". He was saying incorrect things had been "reported" in the media - that's the air he was clearing.

"clearing the air" implies refuting rumors

not some sort of personality cleansing.
And it sounds like he was in pretty constant contact with the leaders on the team. Boyd implied that he was kept up to date by Morris on the whole process.
People look at other jobs and even interview in business all the time. Its only in sports where we know when folks are interviewing.

Clearing needs to go on all the time - any kind of relationships - esp. marriage! Very healthy to keep the communications open and the air clear!

to work! Stop making excuses! This is the way it's going to be. I want to be a head coach. Our success is going to cause my phone to ring. There will be rumors swirling. It's got to be the right job, but you better get used to it. I will do my part to have you prepared to win this bowl game. I can walk and chew gum at the same time. Now you have to do what you need to do to win this game. No excuses. Now get to work!"

You're not. Unfortunately, its the nature of the beast; one that doesn't build any sense of loyalty. I'll tell you what it does do, a man's true character, sure comes to light pretty quickly. But, what the heck, Coach Swinney probably already knew that when he hired him.
