This is a big day.

I've ordered a vacuum pump for my 84 300SD.

Yep, I replaced the vac pods when I replaced the interior a couple years ago. It still heats and cools but there's no air moving at the footwells.

My main issue is the transmission shifting. The transmission reacts to vacuum level. As the accelerator is pressed the vacuum bleeds off. Lower vacuum creates harder shifts. The transmission believes that the driver is requesting a hard/fast shift and that the engine is under heavy load.

I just replaced the damage done by the hard shift a few weeks ago. The center carrier was making a bad thunk so I went from transmission to rear housing and replaced everything except the two piece drive shaft.

My next project will be the turbo charger.

I'm impressed you understand this system. Most Benz owners haven't a clue why their newly rebuilt transmissions don't work.

Most Benz owners don't know why their cars work.

They stick a key in the ignition, turn it, and its all magic after that.

Most all owners are that way.

Benz manufactured cars with diesel engines in the 70s and 80s many of which are still running. Those were the particular owners that I'm referencing. Most of those guys understand their engines, glow plugs and such they just don't understand the vac systems.
