Argument for Opening Schools Wall Street Journal Article

Jul 14, 2020, 11:16 AM

Very good article on why schools should reopen.
If it were about safety to the kids, it seems schools would never open.

Wow! That was really convincing! Parents will be swayed

by the strong arguments made.

Gotta get those kids back to school so their parents can get back to work and the economy improves so Trump can get re-elected. That seems to be the overriding concern.

Paywall, but just going off the stats in the teaser

Jul 14, 2020, 5:58 PM

it seems the author(s) are focusing on the individual. I'll offer this: There are roughly 50 million school-age kids in the US, if we send them to school that creates 50 million potential disease vectors. If were able to isolate every single kid after each school, they could spread it around amongst each other without fear of spreading it to others. Still some of them would die. After school isolation isn't realistic, so even if their mortality rate is low the hyper-exponential spread to everyone around them would be nearly inconceivable. It's a math equation...and it doesn't favor sending kids to school. End of story.

Between 3 and 40% of students in South Carolina do not have access to high speed internet. These students have already missed 1/24 of their public-school education. If they don’t go to school this next semester, they will have missed 1/12 of their education in public school of all grades. If you pick a small number based on the attached article and say only 10% don’t have access to high speed internet, not to mention parents than can help them with their work, your 50 million students number means 5 million students will miss 1/12 of their education. I will not bring up the students who eat breakfast and lunch at school which may be their most whole sum meals of the day. And the fact that child abuse is often caught at schools. And I will not mention if we wait till there is a vaccine, they could even miss more school. Child care problems for working parents is another issue. End of story!

My wife is a 57 year old high school teacher. She is adamant that school needs to resume for the kids. 17,000 kids have gotten "lost" in the SC school system since in person school has stopped. That number will grow. She and I are willing to take the small risk to get the kids back in school.
