Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 4:30 PM

Will Donald Trump get the Republican nomination and what do you think about him? He just gave a really solid interview on Neil Cavuto on Fox News. I realize that's a broad question, but just wondering what people's thoughts in the Southeast are. Thanks ahead of time for whatever answer you give.

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 4:38 PM

I am torn on this one. On one hand, I think he's creating a circus show out of this election cycle for republicans. I don't think he is a good representative for our country and he seems to only know just enough to make him dangerous when it comes to policy. On the other hand, I think he will be able to put some really smart people in place to make the right decisions and take the country in a different direction.

I think at the end of the day, I don't want to see him get the nomination. But he's got a lot of support, and if he doesn't get the nomination I hope he swings that support toward whoever does get it.

If he doesn't get the nod and runs as an independent we're(republicans) screwed.

You'll have a split republican vote which gives the power/numbers to the liberals.

This is true. I'd like to think, if he really has conservative values, he'll understand how that will end up and he won't do it. But ... hard to tell where his values lie since he bats for both teams.

I know that sounds odd. I am not really that political. I am really just into Clemson, family, sports, my dogs, blah blah. Anyway, I was just wondering if Trump, a New York City dude, was resonating with the Southern Republican voter. It was jut a curiosity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I wasn't really trying to be that political...

Oct 13, 2015, 4:55 PM

Trump resonates with southern republicans primarily due to his singular focus on immigration and the overall lack of trust in the government. I don't see him providing any viable solutions to either issue, though, in addition to his major shortcomings in foreign policy or economic matters.

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 4:49 PM

I think he's a terrible representation of the party and of what concerns Americans most at the time. I've been a supporter of Carson primarily for his leadership style and ability, in addition to his willingness to focus on the issues of inner-city poverty and race relations. However, Marco Rubio strikes me as an excellent candidate as well and someone who could do a lot of good for the country.

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 4:58 PM

I love his willingness to call out media BS. I believe the media and their use of social media in particular has ruined people's ability to get a clear view of a candidate through their cutting of speeches into a couple quotes taken out of context.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 4:58 PM [ in reply to Re: Question for just Republicans ]

I saw an interview with Carson on Charlie Rose recently and I was extremely with his intelligence and sincerity. I don't know what type of president he would be, but there is no doubt he is smart deep thinker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 5:03 PM

I could see him as a similar president to FDR - not in political leanings, but in his approach to leadership by surrounding himself with the best cabinet he can and by connecting with the American people on an individual basis (much like FDR did with his Fireside Chats).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 5:09 PM

I could see why you would think that. He seems like everything he says is well thought out generally speaking. I completely enjoyed his interview. I like hearing what he has to say. You know how you listen to someone like Ted Cruz and just oozes politician. Carson is the polar opposite, yet extremely smart as the same time. I wouldn't mind him being president a bit when it comes to domestic issues. I wonder what he would be like on international issues..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 9:54 PM

He is the polar opposite of now. He believes that we should maintain a strong presence in the world and not take crap from anybody. I love how he said he would untie the hands of the military and let us get back to our core tasks of "breaking stuff" and "killing people". It made me get all warm and fuzzy! :)

Serious answer

Oct 13, 2015, 4:49 PM

I am a Republican. I am afraid he will get the nomination and it will seal the deal for Hillary. We live in an age of soundbites and popularity contests, which Obama also owes his election.

Unfortunately I don't see a very viable Republican challenger. Jeb Bush is the best qualified IMHO and would make a solid president but he's just too vanilla for the election.

Re: Hillary will win this state

Oct 13, 2015, 5:38 PM

I think Sanders is the one we'll have to worry about. His pie-in-the-sky utopian America speeches have all the idealists with no understanding of simple fiscal, labor, or behavioral economics up in arms ready for a socialist revolution. I legitimately think that the USA could be permanently knocked off its perch under a Sanders presidency.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 5:18 PM

I do not trust Trump-In the past he has not espoused conservative views-now all of a sudden he wants us to think he's Reagan. However if he runs against Hillary, Trump has my vote because Hillary has always been arrogant and the biggest liar I have seen-going all the way back to when she was dismissed from the Watergate hearings for her lack of integrity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he'd be fine with Domestic Policy

Oct 13, 2015, 5:27 PM

However, I really have concerns of his ability to strategically and responsibly develop/executive American Foreign Policy

Re: Question for just Republicans

Oct 13, 2015, 5:50 PM

I am a registered Republican and I hope he does not get the nomination. It boggles my mind that he has this level of support. He has NOTHING to say about anything except economics. Foreign policy: “I’ll get along with the other leaders”. Women (aside for calling them pigs, or whatever, and references to Fiorina’s looks), “My administration will be good for women, trust me.” REALLY?!?! “I’ll get along”… “trust me”!?!? Rubio and Fiorina nailed him in the debate. I can't imagine that personality on an international stage.

He used to be a Democrat or at least a pretty “moderate” republican. Now he is swinging right for this campaign. I can’t believe anyone buys it. I suppose the attraction is the fact that he is not politically correct and that he is blunt and says what he means. That is all good, but Lord, there are too many negatives. I have preferred Christie for a similar bluntness and anti-politically correctness. I suppose he isn’t tea party-ish enough for others.

If Trump wins the nomination and runs against Hillary, I’ll vote libertarian again (or maybe some other party). I couldn’t bring myself to vote for one of those two.
