It was one of many bad calls that gave them a first down that could have ended up winning the game for them and resulted in us losing a player. That one call could have resulted in us losing two games. Kinda a big deal when the refs have an easy job when replay can be used.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: #reinstatesmith

Nov 9, 2014, 1:33 PM

It is hard for me to believe that somebody in the review booth could get that so wrong without malice and aforethought. It's just not really believable that the call could be sustained after a review by a "non-partisan" and "unbiased" party. I call for a BS 15 yard penalty flag to be thrown on that one.

That was the worst officiated game ive watched all year and im talking all of college football! I saw wake hold and grab our face masks all night, not turn to find the ball in the air but hold our wr hands down, yet we were penalized for great plays! Our DBs are taught to lead with your front arm to knock the ball down and they did and were called for a great play! Those officials are a disgrace to the league and Swofford yet again gets away with giving us the business! I'm not a conspiracy guy just a realist

Severe consequences and repercussions for a flagrant abuse. I can excuse the ref on the field for the call, but not the one reviewing who had the chance to see what we all saw that proved it was BS.

Re: The Big 10 reinstated Earnest Thomas after being ejected

Nov 7, 2014, 1:39 PM [ in reply to The Big 10 reinstated Earnest Thomas after being ejected ]

Looks like Earnest Thomas was ejected in the second quarter, meaning he'd be ineligible the rest of the second quarter and the next half, not during the next game.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-earnest-thomas-illinois-targeting-spt-0923-20140923-story.html

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see why that matters--the point is that they

Nov 7, 2014, 2:33 PM

overturned the suspension. The same thing should happen in Robert Smith's case.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, but

Nov 7, 2014, 1:07 PM

The in-game review needs to not go by the "indisputable evidence" rule. They should be able to confirm or deny the call on the field as if making it the first time. I don't know what the review rules are, but hopefully that is not one of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think all replay reviews would fall under

Nov 7, 2014, 1:14 PM

"indisputable evidence" guidelines.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you see why that's garbage in a case like this though?

Nov 7, 2014, 3:55 PM

Refs shouldn't be afraid to call targeting so that it can be accurately determined in the booth. Considering this call turns into a multi-game-effecting penalty, they have to get it right or allow appeals.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So the NCAA passed a rule prohibiting conferences from

Nov 7, 2014, 1:19 PM

righting an obvious wrong? Something is broken here, folks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is not really true. The conference is not prohibited

Nov 7, 2014, 1:27 PM

from righting the wrong. It now is done by a replay official immediately after the play, not the league office the following week.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, actually it is right. The conference is not allowed

Nov 7, 2014, 1:38 PM

to correct the mistake. The mistake being that of the replay official. So, yeah, it's right.

This led to 3 points by Wake, hurt a young man and will hurt us against GaTech. Maybe that's what the replay official wanted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SOCON overturned an ejection 2 weeks ago?

Nov 7, 2014, 4:02 PM

I don't understand why we can't appeal. The Southern Conference overturned an ejection of Carson Smith after an ejection a few weeks ago. They admitted they made a mistake after The Citadel appealed. How is it that The Citadel can have an ejection overturned but we cannot?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SOCON overturned an ejection 2 weeks ago?

Nov 7, 2014, 7:22 PM

the only way you can appeal a targeting hit is if the schools playing do not have a replay booth and can watch the play right then. If the target happens in 1st half, the coach has appeal before the 2nd half starts, and if it occurs during 2nd half, the appeal has to be made immediately after the game.

Not all SO Con teams have replay for home games.

Not sure if this is what happened, but I do know that how some conferences do it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1 minute and 45 seconds

Nov 7, 2014, 7:34 PM

That's how long it took the replay official to make his ruling.

By the way, Keith Roden, the replay official, is a graduate of The Citadel.

Maybe he thought it could be overruled later.

That's an awful quick FINAL DECISION.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

Since you know a little about said official how about a

Nov 7, 2014, 10:18 PM

phone number so we can call him every minute and 45 seconds and hang up, to
just let him know how quick his decision was and annoying it can be to fans.
Some think that amount of time is an entirety but he should know how short that
amount of time he spent hurting a non paid players future. He is paid to make the
correct decision and has a wealth of technology at his finger tips and he chose to
make a quick decision and the wrong decision at that. In America no one accepts the
the blame for mistakes but rather try to explain it way or blame some one else. This
guy needs to come out and say I blew the call or he needs to get a new job. Now that I
have seen him in action he qualifies for a drive through fast food window operator.
They never get your order right and by the time you figure it out it is too late.

I don't blame them for calling it on the field...

Nov 7, 2014, 7:02 PM

But the replay clearly (no fan speak) showed it wasn't targeting. Heck, if it was a coot in place of Smith, I'd still defend him. That was just a dumb call and now no one will answer for it...it'll just get swept under the rug and that person in the booth will continue to be incompetent at their job.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That explanation is total crap. Last year there was a review

Nov 8, 2014, 8:12 AM

of the play during the game. The 15 yard penalty was not reviewable, but the automatic ejection was reviewable. And, overturning the objection was not held to the "indisputable evidence" standard. Basically, in 2013 the on field official decided if there should be a 15 yard penalty and the booth official decided if there should be an ejection.

The change for 2014 was to "fix" the issue of if the player wasn't ejected, it can't be targeting, so the penalty shouldn't stand. The intent of the rule change was to further "right the wrong" of a bad call. The ACC/NCAA is now using it as an excuse to cover up complete incompetence or corruption on the part of the booth official.
