Old Timers Question

Dec 17, 2018, 10:18 AM

Was discussing QB's drafted from Clemson to the NFL with a buddy of mine. We came up with Watson, Boyd, Whitehurst and Fuller, but before them all was a guy named Lowndes Shingler. Apparently he committed suicide so there's very little to be found online about him. Any old timers have details on his time at Clemson and circumstances of his passing? He was apparently drafted by both the AFL Raiders and NFL Cowboys in 61, so it seems very odd for a kid with such a promising NFL future. Thanks.

Re: Old Timers Question

Lowndes Shingler was the second team QB on the 58 and 59 bowl teams, and Harvey White was the starter. Shingler was the MVP in the 1959 victory over TCU in the first Blue Bonnet Bowl, and White was drafted by the Patriots when the season ended.

Even back then, there was a QB controversy about which one should be the starter, but White was the best passer. Both were from Greenwood and would fit well in our current offense. Since it was one platoon football in those days with very limited substitution, they both played on defense also and were good safeties.

Shingler was the 1960 starter and was very athletic, a good runner and passer.

I heard from a good source that he was suffering from terminal cancer and took his own life. I believed that to be true.

I think Harvey White

was the first player drafted by the old American Football League. Without doing a lot of research, I think he was drafted by the Boston Patriots. He played in 3 games.

Harvey White was a big QB at that time. He could fall forward for three yards and our offense was basically three yards and a cloud of dust. Babb was the coach at Greenwood and they always had a good team.
