I see a lot of concern with OL recruiting and what not

Jan 20, 2014, 1:41 PM

Is 16/17 OL not enough? Are you guys just anticipating future departures of these guys? I think FSU won a NT with several fewer OL and one or two of those starters were converted from DL. Just curious why you guys seem are fretting about the numbers?

1)Jay Guillermo
2)Shaq Anthony
3)Isaiah Battle
4)David Beasley
5)Darrell Brevard
6)Tyrone Crowder

Re: I see a lot of concern with OL recruiting and what not

Jan 20, 2014, 1:49 PM

Gif gave up football due to injury; Region got out of shape and hasn't done anything, Guillermo remains to be proven.

Many others have to show that they can protect the QB and with some of the issues seen last year, you would think one of them would have been put in to help

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we have had a LOT of attrition for a few years now. I like

We lose 10 over the next 2 years to graduation

Jan 20, 2014, 1:51 PM

It takes time to develop an OLman. We should be bringing in 3-5 OL a year and plan for a 5 year cycle with them. Plus a significant number of OLmen never pan out to be more than spot players.

And with our offense, we need to be able to rotate in linemen so we might actually need more than the average.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chad has specifically said he'd rather not rotate

Jan 20, 2014, 1:57 PM

But what does he know?

If you look at our participation stats, he rotates a bunch

Jan 20, 2014, 5:21 PM [ in reply to Chad has specifically said he'd rather not rotate ]

we play a number of various OL combinations during the games. Its never wholesale substitutions, but our OL folks (that can actually contribute) aren't hurting for playing time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe that O-lineman are the ones least likely to step

right in and play----you must develop physically, mentally and stay healthy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I see a lot of concern with OL recruiting and what not

Jan 20, 2014, 1:51 PM

How many do we lose the next 2 years?

That's the concern. We have signed 2 last year and are signing 2 this year.

Averaging 2 per year, even if they all redshirt equals 10 total offensive linemen. That's not enough.

#'s 5 and 16 on your list are walkons. I doubt they are really in mix for signifigant pt since we have heard so little about them. I'm all for us developing OL that are wlakons. Nebraska has for years. Tommy Sharp is the only one I remember her at CU for a while

Great list with guys not even on the team anymore and walkon

Jan 20, 2014, 1:58 PM

You can start by removing Giff Timothy from the list, and you can end by telling us who Brevard and Tucker are.

'Guys' is plural, you mean Giff only? My bad.***

And have him take up a scholly for 5 years? I would rather be willing to go into a season with 7 OL and try again next recruiting cycle then offer someone just to fill a blind number push.

Jan 20, 2014, 2:04 PM

Are you expecting a medical redshirt to extend Morris or Crowder past the 4 years of eligibility they have left?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Country gentleman

Jan 20, 2014, 2:07 PM

No - I;m counting the present year they are in.

They have four more seasons to compete and working off the 2 Olinemen we will sign in Feb 2014.

Plus I've heard Jabril Robinson was projected to play OL?

Exactly

Jan 20, 2014, 2:12 PM

Sometime in the next four years they will leave CU and we will have to replace them. Either way you missed the point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly

Jan 20, 2014, 2:16 PM

No - you missed the point. We lose the majority of our offensive linemen in the nest two years. Offensive line is the largest position group on the football field (Five). Offensive linemen are the hardest position to develop from a physical and mental standpoint and we need to sign more than 2 per year.

Jan 20, 2014, 2:30 PM

I realize your concerne is for the 58% of our scholarship linemen losing eligibility in two years. Just wanted to make you aware that we will have to replace 100% in 4. Seems like we are just a couple scholarships off from having even rotation. I wonder if that has anything to do with the dandy dozen finally cycling out. Probably would be working out better if we hadn't offered a few duds that are taking up scholarships we could have offered this cycle. Glad Dabo didn't make that mistake again and that you are not in charge of recruiting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Easy Gentleman

Jan 20, 2014, 2:34 PM

I'll agree we need more players, not bodies/numbers.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

totally agree I'm not just counting helmets or just rolling

Jan 20, 2014, 2:55 PM

any five out

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All I was saying is that FSU did it with less, and 2

Jan 20, 2014, 3:00 PM

starters were converted from DL. If Jabril is going to be converted like some on here seem to believe plus Cannon Smith maybe be a future OL, then maybe the numbers aren't as off as some would have you to believe. Pagano may even be a OL before all is said and done...he's apparently has a mean streak which would be nice to see on the OL...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU has 20 folks listed as OL on their 2013 roster

Jan 20, 2014, 3:17 PM

And they are in much the same boat as we are. They have 10 of them that are Jr and above.

They brought in 8 OL in 11, and are bringing in 6 in 14. 12 and 13 were low for them with only 5 total.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hmm, that blows my mind. Seems like a few months ago I

Jan 20, 2014, 3:30 PM

created a thread comparing the numbers and FSU only had ~14 on the roster. Either time has slipped faster or I was looking at an outdated website. From now on everyone knows to take what I say with grade of slaw...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Could be that some of these were Redshirted

Jan 20, 2014, 5:17 PM

and weren't on an earlier roster. And/or you were looking at a depth chart and not a full roster. and/or were converted from another position during the season.

Any number of reasons for the difference. But it sure looks like FSU wants to carry more OLmen than we do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed

Jan 20, 2014, 2:48 PM

But I think our OL is better than some think. I also think there are capable replacements in the fold. We have this year and next to be choosey and I hope we nail it on the trail. After that I'll be worried but not until then.
