Those who think Dabo = Danny are forgetting one thing.

Morris is responsible for as many wins in the last two years as Dabo. We are a 7 or 8 win team this year without Morris. Furthermore, Dabo's teams are so physically weak compared to Danny's that it is not even comparable. The truth is the truth. Get pissed if you want.

We've been over this more than once. Accountability, responsibility and authority are given in equal measures.
You can't give Morris the credit for the wins without the responsibility for the losses. You can't make Dabo accountable for losses without giving him credit for the wins.
When you pick and choose the information that supports your presupposition it removes all doubt that you are thinking with your groin. Had you remained at Clemson and graduated here, you'd understand that.

According to the book Tales From the 1981 Championship, he hired coaches and let them coach. Danny particularly paid attention to the offensive line though.
Yes I have to read about it because I didn't live it.

I thought is was a fair question. Perhaps worded a little harshly, but still a good question.
How old is the OP and how did they (not sure if it's a he or a she) formulate thier opinion about the DF years?

Physical toughness starts and ends at the line of scrimmage - which was exactly what Amanda posted about.
Clemson, under Dabo, has not been dominate on the lines, which explains why we lost to USC and FSU. Our teams aren't tough.
Also see last years Wofford game where they pushed us around.
No clue what you're talking about.

Dabo is not Danny. Dabo hired Chad Morris. That makes Dabo a good head coach--putting people who can coach for him into the right positions.

There is a great interview with Danny which was conducted by a student broadcast organization this past fall. It's about 36 mins and available on Utube. The most important thing to remember is there were different challenges and both are worthy of our full support.

When I hear or read this kind of talk, it's maddening!!! While I don't compare Dabo to Danny, I'd like to point out that you are also forgetting one very important thing.
There's not a successful coach out there that did not hire the best assistant staffs - not the Bear, not Bobby Bowden, not Joe Pa, not Steve Spurrier, not Danny Ford, NOT ANYONE.
Morris's contributions to the level of Clemson's current success are directly related to Dabo's ability, as a head coach, to attract/ hire such a coordinator. That's part of what head coaches do.
I had a Gamecock fan tell me over the holidays that Dabo should thank his lucky stars that he has Morris as a coordinator to compliment his recruiting abilities.
When I stopped laughing at his short-sightedness, I told him that he just listed TWO attributes of a successful head man, not ONE. That is recruiting/signing good athletes AND recruiting/hiring good coaches.
He had to admit that his thoughts on the topic were way off the mark.
How about you?

i can still remember the folks that were about to run Danny out of town after going 6-5, i mean these folks said hateful, hateful stuff about Danny and he was not meant to be a head coach, many thought he wasnt even and assistant coach to begin with. Alot of people said that they wouldnt even give to IPTAY because Danny Ford was head coach...memories

And a couple things you forgot:

Danny coached in an 8 then 9 team ACC without any real competition other than GT, and occasionally NCST or UNC were good. I'm not saying his teams weren't good, they were, it's just apples and oranges now. Dabo is doing well. Do we have the physical team he promised, ...no, but we are improving.

Check them out for yourself.
I agree UMD was a good team when Ross was there, but sometimes our memories make them out to be better than they actually were. The best they did was 9-3 in the weak ACC. An ACC that did not have FSU, Miami, Va Tech.
Personally I don't think the ACC is much, if any, weaker now than it was in Danny's days. Face it, the ACC has always been weak. It's silly to suggest otherwise.

Dec 27, 2012, 2:20 PM

mental than physical.
Certainly any team can afford to improve physically, but I think the toughness has to come from within. There has to be a determination not to lose...a focus to win...and a mental steel will to make it happen.
Many an army/team/fighter that had maybe less physical girth or strength or talent has won with sheer will.
With that being said, I just don't think Clemson's physical tools are that much disparate to see losses to SCAR and possibly LSU. We definitely aren't disparate in talent for skill positions, but our lines are the topic of discussion. I just don't think even they are that disparate in physical talent or even strength. But I do think they need significant improvement in developing a steel will.

Amanda, you are exactly right! Dabo Swinney is not Danny Ford, but it's unfair to expect him to be.
If you look at what shape the program was in when Dabo took over then you will see that Dabo has done the one thing that was asked of him when he was hired... he has made Clemson Tiger football relevant again!
In 2008 Dabo took over a team that had begun well in '06 and '07, but both years had managed to finish the season as a complete failure. Remember, that's why Tommy Bowden got the boot.
Dabo has taken a consistently mediocre program and turned it into a team that is considered one of the heavy hitters in the ACC, and a perennial front runner for the division championship.
Yes, Chad Morris deserves a lot of credit for bringing the Pistol offense to Clemson, but Dabo brought him here, and Dabo has managed to keep him, even though Chad Morris is one of the most sought after assistants in the country.
So, no, Dabo is not Danny. But he sure is one heck of a coach!
