What are you looking for in addition to golf? Night life, bars, etc. How expensive? How far from where you live? What time of year?
One of my favorite unknown courses is Olde Mill Resort in Virginia. Do not be mislead by the "resort" name. It is not a true resort. It is a beautiful, great to play mountain course off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was designed but Ellis Maples. I can get there from the Clemson area in a little over 4 hours. They have condos to stay in but I have never stayed on the grounds.I stay in a small privately run old motel several miles away. There is nothing else to do around the area. It is remote and in the country. I use to drive 2 hours from Roanoke, Va just to play golf there when I was an intern. They have great packages for reasonable prices. You can play multiple rounds a day for little additional cost. It has never been crowded when I have been there, in fact I am usually one of only a few people playing.
There is also another resort which a friend has told me is awesome just a few miles away. It is called Primeland and is in Meadow of Dan, Va. I do not know anything about it but I think it is pretty high end.

Scotland & Ireland. If on a budget, Pinehurst area but don't waste your money on Pinehurst CC. Too many other courses in the area. Tobacco Road is a must. there are plenty of packages like this one - http://tobaccoroadtravel.com/package/sandhills-select/

I went on my bachelor party earlier this year, was a blast. Very fun town, not too crazy, except bourbon St. which we didnt even go. Didn't play golf down there but I know they have a few courses. If you haven't been, you need to, it's great. There is a casino there too, Frenchman St. is awesome, amazing music ect. Big Easy, good bang for your buck too.

Myrtle Beach hands down... That is if you want more than just golf... All the other places mentioned except Vegas are just for golf. Plenty of night life, parties and chicks. Have fun, because it all gets serious after I do...

I played Pebble Beach....

Mar 8, 2016, 10:36 AM

about twelve years ago. At the time, the green fees were in excess of $400. I suspect it's closer to $500 today.

I've played Pebble Beach and Augusta National (twice). Maybe one day I can complete the trifecta and play the Old Course at St. Andrews.

A recommendation for anyone interested in playing Pebble Beach, if you schedule your trip in early September which is the time they aerate the greens each year, the green fee are reduced to $250 and $350.

I played Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach 2 yrs. ago

Mar 8, 2016, 11:02 AM

In a wounded warrior tourney. All expenses paid except for dinner. Put us up in Monterey Marriott for free. Talk about a dream....if there are prettier parts of this country than that area, I have yet to see them. I live in San Jose now and play Monterey courses regularly. Pebble and other courses in that compound are staggeringly beautiful. Public courses there like Laguna Seca, Pacific Grove, Monterey Pines are great as well though the Pebble Compound is on another level, of course. Monterey Pines, owned by the Navy, is cheap for old retired Marines like me and its cool to tee off about 500 yards from where Jimi set his guitar on fire at 1967's Monterey Pop Festival.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ive heard some packages are around 350 bucks if u stay in lo

Mar 8, 2016, 11:08 AM [ in reply to I played Pebble Beach.... ]

At Pebble for 2 nights. It is not a place to go if u do not want to open the wallet, as u know from playing it.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've been told....

Mar 8, 2016, 11:19 AM

that you now almost have to stay a minimum of two nights on the property in order to have any real chance at playing the course.

Of course, Cypress Point, Spyglass, Poppy Hills, Spanish Bay and Monterey are all nice courses too.

If u are a member of the Northern CA Golf Assoc.

Mar 8, 2016, 11:28 AM

U can play Poppy Hills for 50 bucks. I just joined last week and Poppy will be played soon. Ive got an 80 year old neighbor who played for over 60 years all over the country and he swears Spyglass and Bandon Dunes are better courses than Pebble in terms of difficulty. Spanish Bay was staggeringly pretty but not crazy difficult. Ive played Torrey twice, north and south, and it is phenomenal also. I am so glad i picked the game up 20 years ago. It is a passion.
