Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Apr 4, 2020, 10:25 AM

Is playing golf really a "safe" activity and should you be doing it?

Staying at home is tough. Would love to go out and knock the rock around the course a bit while maintaining safety.

Is that possible?

Yeah...they just make you walk and not sit in carts with people.

safety. My wife and I have push carts and always walk, but I am having doubts about whether or not it is the right thing to do.

I think it would be a safe thing. Fresh air and sun.

I’ve played twice now. I feel very safe doing it. At my club, there are no rakes near bunkers, we don’t pull the flags any more, we’re outside... no worries on my end. I think it’s the same risk level as taking a walk around a subdivision.

Just out of curiosity, where do you play?

Most Florida private clubs still ride - but all single.

The safety measures golf courses are implementing should keep it very safe. Now if you are in a high risk category maybe should not play.

I've been playing a couple times a week. Some courses are giving everyone their own cart. The holes have a piece of foam in the cup so the ball only falls about half way in so you can grab your ball without touching the flagstick. Bunker rakes have been removed also.

The only thing I worry about is having to go inside and pay for your golf with other people standing in line. I try to get in and out as quick as possible.

Re: Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Apr 4, 2020, 10:51 AM

Being there is no bunker rakes in the sand traps, bet there are some bad awful lies after a ball rolls into where someone digs their shoes into the sand to stay balanced or where somewhere hit their ball and another ball rolls into that hole. That would suck having to hit out of those situations, kinda like hitting out of a divot in the fairway and a putting over a ball mark on the green.

Re: Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Apr 4, 2020, 11:22 AM

There's not a lot of play so it hasn't been that bad. The rounds are going faster with people not having to rake the bunker or being able to pull the flag. We played in under 4 hours a couple days ago and it's usually 4 1/2 to 5 hour rounds this time of year.

Which courses are you playing in Myrtle Beach that are open?I road by Burning Ridge Golf Club off of Hwy 501 on Monday and there were no cars in the parking lot there at about 11am so I assumed they were closed.

Apr 4, 2020, 2:14 PM

I play at Legends mostly. Burning Ridge, Wild Wing, and I think a couple more down south that are in the Prime Time group closed. I know someone who works at Wild Wing and he said they lost all their spring package play which a lot of these courses depend on. A lot of courses are still open though.

Have an annual golf outing in late summer or early fall with high school classmates and have stayed at Legends several times. Just curious if they're still booking golf packages in the condos?

Re: Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Apr 4, 2020, 8:18 PM

Doesn’t seem like they are booking packages now because it’s so slow but I’m sure they are for late summer. They depend on their package play as well but they have a killer membership deal for locals that is keeping them somewhat busy.

We are using the foam, no rakes, no sand bottles, no water

Apr 4, 2020, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Re: Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic. ]

or ice, no range. If you walk you dont have to pay over what the monthly fee is, so I don't have to go inside, which is my greatest fear as well.

I am 59, almost 60 with allergies. I've been playing up until last Sunday before the guilt got the best of me. That, plus our course has been packed.

One positive is any putt inside a driver length is good so you don't have to take the ball off the foam. <img border=">

Re: We are using the foam, no rakes, no sand bottles, no water

Apr 4, 2020, 11:19 AM

The courses I typically play are usually booked solid 4-5 days in advance, but it has been extremely slow and I'm in Myrtle Beach. A lot of courses are offering up to 60% off just to try and make it through and some have closed temporarily. I feel like the ones that are open are doing a good job keeping people safe.

My group is not that generous with gimmees. <img border=">

our course, a decidedly rural course . . .

Apr 4, 2020, 12:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Golf during the Covid-19 Pandemic. ]

only allows one person in the Club House at a time . . . No rakes . . . Flags stay in . . . Ride alone . . . and Wipe the carts at our own discretion . . . Don't handle each other's equipment . . .

We play once or twice a week depending on everyone's schedules.

golf provides on a normal basis. Walking or riding solo certainly do that part, but mostly giving your lungs a chance to pump some fresh outdoor air for hours has to be a benefit.

I'm playing 9 holes, twice a week, with one friend, and we walk.Until the Governor closes the courses,I plan on playing.Usually the course I play (won't name it out of fairness) is not that crowded and if there is wait at the 1st hole I'll go to the putting green.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I play several times a week

Apr 4, 2020, 2:05 PM

First, it is a private club. That helps.
Single rider per cart.
Pro shop not open to members.
Carts cleaned every round.
Rakes, ballwashers, etc removed.
Flagsticks not removed and form put into cup so ball stays up.
Driving range positions spread out.
Anything is possible, but golf is still here, thank goodness.

Another plus of golf during this pandemic is the fact that it's now socially unacceptable to bend over and pick up someone's wedge for them walking back to the cart.

Some courses are leaving the cup about an inch above the green so you want even get close to the flag. Hit the cup, consider it holed.

Most courses here in the Tampa Bay area are still open. Governor DeSantis has mentioned it is a safe activity with the few changes all courses have enacted. I have a 8:10 tee time tomorrow at Silverthorn CC in Brooksville. We have 53 cases in Pasco County with a population of 540,000.

We do have a "shelter" order statewide here in Florida (since Friday) but my job is considered essential so I still work each day.
