What tax software (or site) DO you use?

Jan 22, 2019, 8:54 AM

I've used 2 or 3 different ones over the year. Using H&R block now.

Also, have you ever used the software, then used a CPA same year to compare?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Used Credit Karma last year, plan to do the same this year

Jan 22, 2019, 8:55 AM

but haven't gotten W2 from old job yet.

I've used Turbo Tax and Tax Act.

Jan 22, 2019, 8:57 AM

I think I ran numbers with Tax Slayer one year. Turbo Tax was nice, but I don't think helpful enough to justify the price.

Credit Karma

Jan 22, 2019, 8:57 AM

You really can't beat it if you have somewhat of a clue of what you're doing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't even know they had tax software.

Jan 22, 2019, 8:59 AM

Will look into that.

That turbo tax charges for after you buy their software (or are given it by another family).

Jan 22, 2019, 11:54 AM [ in reply to what about more complicated/involved returns??*** ]

have a dividend issue this year to add, but I do not foresee that being too complicated. Side note, rumor has it the standard deduction is higher this year by a good bit as well as the child tax credit. So....taxes SHOULD be a little easier for most people, right? Also, I may be dumb.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you is right

Jan 22, 2019, 11:56 AM

re: the DUMB part.

butt also, the increased (doubled, I think) standard deduction and child credit (lucky you, amirite?)

I'm still gonna itemize this go'round, and compare. Taxslayer let's you compare the 2 methods at any point, to see which benefits you more....I wonder if Credit Karma has that.

Past several years, itemizing has been WAAAAAAY MO'BETTA.

Might change this year

have used both TurboTax and TaxAct (kinda hated both, especially tax act...however, it's been 5-6 years since...maybe they've improved)

3 years ago, a lot of things changed w/ us and our finances, and we owed a TON...never had before...so I took it to a highly rec'd (by my super-financially minded frand) H&R Block lady....she looked things over, basically said I did'em right, welcome to adulthood. Didn't charge me for it
