going home from college to see the parents. A buddy from the hometown was catching a ride home with me. I just assumed he had $5 or so to contribute to the cause. He was flat broke like me.

We found something like $1.68 on the floor to "fill up" with. Pretty embarrassing going into the Jiffy Mart to buy gas with a handful of change.

We somehow made it home. I was literally taking it out of gear on hills and coasting.

Next morning my dad was gonna take the car to fill it up. It wouldn't start - flat empty.

Also, a few years later as a dirt-poor graduate, I drove my car (same one) about 3 months with a dead battery because I couldn't afford a new one. Always parked on a hill so I could push-start it. (thank God for manual trannys)

deal with the credit card in college. Don't know if they still do this, but they had little stands around campus with stacks of free t-shirts. All you had to do was sign up for a credit card. Almost everyone I knew who got the free super-cool t-shirt also left Clemson with anywhere from 5K to 10K in credit card debt....tacked to their student loans. I used to love to hang out with those guys because they always had the cool TV, stereo, and the best parties with cheap (or free) beer.

3 years. Then came them 2001 New Orleans trip. We went to this "nice" restaurant that would not split our check for us. Didn't have/didn't want to use the cash on hand to pay for the dinner. I used my card. It was like $200, nothing insane. Everybody paid me their share...but that money never left New Orleans. This started the slippery slope. Most of my damage was done between 23-26 though.

Lots of little things and a few big things (two times Cole was in the dog hosipital, some huge car repairs, etc) got me ballooned real high.
