Martavis Bryant Potential

May 17, 2014, 12:33 PM

So USA Today/KFFL editors say:

Martavis Bryant has a chance to start right away for the Pittsburgh Steelers. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, he'd be a fine complement to Antonio Brown and could already be Pittsburgh's best red-zone receiving target. It's hard to guarantee Bryant stepping forward immediately, but Sammy Watkins' collegiate teammate legitimately could have a better rookie season and will be ownable for a much cheaper fantasy price.

USA Today is about as accurate/inaccurate as the rest of ESPN/CBS/Yahoo/NFL Network/etc. but I love his chances. Still do not understand those on TigerNet who believe Martavis would have been better served spending his 5th year out of high school as the maybe top receiver at Clemson (when Tajh and Chad grossly underused him for 3 yrs) vs. starting on a high caliber NFL team who needs a deep threat and can teach him pro skills. Go Martavis! Go Tigers!

I love Martavis, but

there is no way in hell he has a better season than Sammy barring injury. The Bills' passing game is predicated on check downs and we will see a lot of the screen game/quick slants to Watkins, who will take care of the rest. Martavis has a very long way to go in terms of efficient and polished route-running, and his biggest strength, the deep route, will be somewhat neutralized at the line of scrimmage given the physicality and experience of NFL corners. Taking nothing away from Martavis who I believe will have a decent NFL career, but it will take a couple of years in the weight room as well as experience on the field before he is in Watkins' ballpark. Now whether or not the Bills will actually be able to get the ball to Watkins, who will be open, is another question.
