Jun 8, 2019, 11:37 AM

after living most of their lives somewhere else ? If so , how is it working out ? How do you like it ? I have lived in Charleston all of my life, but as i reach 60 , i am giving clemson serious thought. ANy thoughts ?

retirement and have been wondering the same thing. At times, I think it would be the perfect place for retirement, but at others I have some serious questions. Would I be happy in a place where most of the population is 18-22 and never aging, while I keep getting even older? Is it just too conservative for me? That's really the main questions I have. After Atlanta, I need a slower pace and less people so I don't think boredom would be a problem. Hope you get some replies that have actually retired there.

I’m very interested to read responses. I’m currently 53, and my daughter arrives on campus this fall. We’re in Michigan and I love the idea to move back to the Clemson area but part time. Current plan is to work full time another two years, and my wife who’s younger would work another 8 or 9 years. That new hotel/condo they are building on the lake has me intrigued. That could allow us to spend portions of the fall and spring near campus but keep a downsized home here in Michigan for the summer and early fall months. I would love to attend basketball and baseball games in the winter/spring months.

Retired to Clemson two years ago and just love being retired in Clemson. So many good things to say about being retired in Clemson If you love going to the different sports it seems there is always something going on from football basketball and all the spring sports People are great , the traffic is wonderful as compared to the larger cities and you have everything you need within a 30 mile radius including mountains, downtown Greenville, etc Best decision I ever made. Go Tigers.

A few years ago, my uncle retired to lake Keowee

and he loves it. It only takes him 15 minutes to drive home from football games and other Clemson events take an even shorter amount of traveling time.

I grew up in Seneca, traveled the country for 10 years, then spent almost 30 years in the Chicago area. There was never another place I wanted to retire other than here. I now live in Six Mile.

Sometimes the traffic around Clemson can be a little slow during the fall and spring semesters but it's nothing like the 11 mile, 45 minute drive I had to and from work outside Chicago.

For a 3:30 or 7:00 PM football game start, it takes about 30 to 35 minutes from driveway to parking and about 5 to 10 minutes longer getting back home. Noon games can be tricky and it's hard to predict the drive times to the game. I plan on an hour driveway to parking for the noon games.

I like the Six Mile area because its about equal distance to Seneca, Pickens and Clemson/Central. Everything needed is within 10 to 15 miles. And, Greenville and Anderson are not a ridiculous long drive. Plus I live within a 5 minute drive of 3 public boat ramps on Lake Keowee. This is nice since the farm is not on the lake. There are also 2 public boat ramps to Lake Hartwell within about 15 minutes and Jocasse is 30 minutes away.

Of course in my situation, it was like getting an instant raise coming back home with lower property taxes and etc.

I came to Clemson in 1955 from Florida and retired in 1986. Friends asked if we were going back to Florida. DEFINITELY NOT!!! If Clemson does not have every thing one wants, Greenville is 30 miles away and Atlanta and Charlotte in the two hour driving range. New developments going up all around Clemson. Many grads and others moving back to Clemson. Another huge development soon to begin on the Millikin property off of US 76 toward Pendleton. Another huge development underway off of US 76 near Pendleton going toward Anderson.

What to do at Clemson? Lake Hartwell at Clemson for boating, fishing and other water related activities. Clemson Univ. sports and all sorts of programs and activities on campus. Can see the mountains from Clemson and just a short drive to the mountains. Clemson is between the mountains and beaches. Good weather, ;ow crime rate, nice city parks, excellent elementary and high school, many churches of choice and a whole lot of other good stuff, A small city with advantages often found in larger cities because of Clemson Univ. It's a diverse population with residents coming from all parts of the US.

Along with the growing population there has been an increase in upscale restaurants, more grocery stores and a larger number of specialty stores. A new shopping center opened across the lake from Clemson recently, including a new motel.

Come check it out. Clemson has much to offer.

Retired here a dozen years ago when it was a small town.
Bah Humbug I want my small town back. Anyone thinking about
the area should stay where they are-my property values will increase anyway!

I'm not retired, but there's a bunch of them around here

Jun 8, 2019, 1:19 PM

the ones I know love it, even ones who lived the bulk of their lives in Northern cities. They assimilate well, and appreciate the simpler lifestyle. Friendly, happy, decent folks. Anybody can change, I suppose ;)

I've lived all over the US through the years, and all over SC, and there's not a better place in the world to live, especially if you like the outdoors. Fishing, golf, mountains, fresh air. Can go to 100 Clemson sporting events a year if you want to. Awesome weather...think about it. As little extreme weather than just about anywhere else. Don't have to worry much about hurricanes, earthquakes, oppressive summers, floods, wildfires, mudslides; just a little snow/ice from time to time that lasts a couple days max. Thunderstorms and a rare tornado are about it.

If you choose your homestead wisely - negligible traffic. Its getting bad in some places unfortunately. Not compared to Charleston or Atlanta of course, but from what it used to be locally.

Plus, I don't know if there are fewer Gamecocks or liberals around. I cannot describe how nice that is.

The one thing I miss living here is a local music scene, having lived in Nashville for a decade spoiled me. I miss the big rock shows, and the little dive bar concerts too. I don't miss shopping, but some might. I'm content at what Tractor Supply, Lowes, and Dollar General offer. Atlanta or Charlotte is 2 hours away if you really need a taste of what we don't have here.

I'm never moving anywhere else, I know that.

Anyone with some thoughts/experience with healthcare options (quality and availability of doctors, hospitals, specialists). I guess if you go to big retirement areas like the Villages in Fla you see all the healthcare and it makes you realize how dependent you will become with regard to needing good healthcare as things break down as we get older. I probably take for it granted because here in this part of Michigan I have 3 large hospitals locally and hence specialists for everything.

I kind of did the opposite,

Jun 8, 2019, 5:37 PM

grew up in the Central/Clemson area for 20+ years and have
lived in Greenville County for 30+ years, the last 25 in
Simpsonville. I loved the small town life of Central and
Clemson and Simpsonville, but Clemson and Simpsonville have
paralleled each other this century in losing the small town
feel with new residential and retail developments popping up
at an alarming rate. The whole upstate may soon be urbanized.

Still, the Clemson area is incredible with the beauty and
recreational value of all the lakes, rivers, mountains, and
parks nearby. If you like nature, it's awesome. And of course
there are all the sporting events at the university. I'm not a
rich man like some of you on here, but I wouldn't mind moving
back to the area when I retire in about 9 years.

Us ol' farts need to remember that we are more likely to need to get to a hospital sometimes, so if you live in CLEMSON, you had better hope you don't need to do that during a home game in the fall. :)

No way would I even consider doing that, but my health isn't all that great. I live close enough to attend games if I feel well enough. I managed to attend the SG, but those hills were rough on me.

I live and work in the Aiken area but have a farm about 15 miles from Clemson too. I will be retiring there in about two years. I love it up there. Short drive in to town but out in the country.
