Recommendation for casual Charleston seafood...

Jul 16, 2017, 10:36 PM

restaurant. Will have my teenage kids and looking for a place that has more than the usual fried shrimp, bland mahi, and crab cakes... family prefers grouper, scallops, or tilefish. Peninsula or Mt Pleasant areas will work.

Jul 16, 2017, 11:07 PM

3 different posts las week asked where I went, well guess, I'M BACK!!! If you want good seafood in Charleston, I recommend Bonefish Grille...never disappoints...:)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bonefish is good, but I wouldn't go to a chain restaurant in

Jul 16, 2017, 11:58 PM

Charleston, when there are so many good local options. Hank's downtown is very good.

Shocking that Timmy Coot would like white trash "seafood".

...every time me and mrs moab visit. On the water, dress is casual, prices aren't bad, food is great. Reservations highly recommended unless you can go to dinner early (4 or 5 ish).

If you're trying to stay around Mt. Pleasant I would recommend The Boathouse on IOP. It's great ! Downtown maybe Amen Fish & Raw bar. There's so much stuff there though anywhere you go will probably be fine. Bowens on Folly, but don't expect a fancy dining experience. Food is amazing, the building itself...not so much.

Fleets landing or Bowens island, unless you want fried seafood then go to the wreck

My kids always liked Gilligan's in Mt. Pleasant...

Jul 17, 2017, 8:18 AM

The last time I was down there I ate at Seewee Restaurant in Awendaw, about 12-13 miles up Hwy. 17 from Mt. Pleasant. Looks like a shack on the outside but they have excellent seafood.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/seewee-restaurant-awendaw-3
And as others have mentioned, The Wreck, and also the Boathouse [at bridge connecting IoP and Sullivans Island]. I've heard the Boathouse is usually very crowded, so plan ahead. Oh, and the Wreck didn't take debit or credit cards back then. Maybe they do now.

For an awesome burger try Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island.

And whatever you do, avoid the tourist trap better known as Hyman's.

Acme Low Country on Isle of Palms is great and shabby. 5 kinds of shrimp and grits. Have always liked Fleet Landing but my daughter, who has been there several times, took her daughter last week and both had a poor experience.

SeeWee on 17 north is better than the Wreck to me and less expensive. Bowen's island is a must do. A fried shrimp plate used to be about $11.00 and as fresh as it gets.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed, plus they serve large portions. My only complaint

Jul 17, 2017, 2:27 PM

with Seewee was the autographed pig of Roy Williams hanging in the dining area.

Forgot to mention to stay away from the tourist traps downtown. For a unique super-casual experience, try fishnet seafood on Hwy 17 towards Rantowles (just outside West Ashley). Use google maps. No seating, it's take out only but you'll see people eating in their cars in parking lot. Another adventurous option in the downtown area is XiaoBao Biscuit (pronounced ChowBow) Not all seafood but they almost always have fish. Neat place with great Asian dishes. Some of which are very spicy.

Jul 17, 2017, 7:59 PM

Coast on John behind Rue De Jean: casual but quality local seafood. Rememberable but not fancy. Always have local grouper, snapper and tile available. Scallops are all shipped in from up north these days so most anywhere will have those.
Wreck has gone down in quality last few years as has Bowens now just fried everything and tourists. Hanks is good but too loud and overpriced. Fleet Landing isn't local anymore. Jestines is always good however long line, but usually have a Whiting blue plate fish special(which is awesome though).

Amen Street is another good option more of a raw bar; just not as many options as coast. Red Drum in mount p is good too, except for serving size.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fleet Landing hands down***

...at least once in their life. 215 Meeting St. It's the place all the music/movie stars drop in when they're in town. Lot's signatures and memorabilia all over. Food was good, overall + experience.
