New cell phone

I worked in the cell phone industry back in the early 2000s when you could still get a free phone upon initial sign up/contract and or extending your contact and or raising a little #### with customer service.

Today I went to buy a new phone and was told I could not buy the phone. ATT told me they could take a down payment not to exceed half the price ($600) of the phone, the remaining balance would be billed to me AFTER a $30 upgrade fee is billed to me. This is probably old news to most of you but I've been working with an iPhone SE for quite some time now. And I purchased that one w/o an upgrade fee or financing it. They're all greedybastards until its time to hand them cash.
