Charlotte recommendations?

Nov 28, 2018, 6:42 PM

So my daughter and I will be flying in late tomorrow night to Charlotte. This will be our 4th ACCCG in a row, but the other 2 trips to Charlotte have been quick.
We'll have all day Friday, Saturday, and part of Sunday. Yes, I know its supposed to be cold and wet.

If you've seen my posts, you'll understand I want to make this trip special.

Any nice dinner recommendations or just awesome places to eat? Thought about dressing up and taking her out fancy, but it doesn't have to be that.
Fun outings during the day?
General points of interests we should check out?
TU to all responses..

I appreciate any tips y'all have to offer. We are coming to see the Tigers, but I'm coming to celebrate life and happiness with her.

Safe travels to all and GO TIGERS!!

This is unbelievable!

And What an unbelievable & marvelous ending!

Plenty of various museums downtown to tour by foot (Nascar, Art, etc)...

Have fun & Go TiGERS!

Given the weather, I’d hit

https://nature.discoveryplace.org/plan?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIje-S_qL43gIVwQOGCh1nsgXDEAAYASABEgK1wPD_BwE

and
https://mintmuseum.org/mint-museum-uptown

Maybe some of the NASCAR team shops and the hall of fame if into that.

Charlotte born and raised, and interned Uptown last summer

One of my favorite places to eat is Vapiano's. It's an European cafeteria style Italian place (awesome pizza and pasta)! Very semi casual/business causal.
-Also there is Dressler's, Fahrenheit (awesome views of Uptown), and Bernadin's

-Fun outing for the day:
Cannot think of anything, Carowinds is having Winterfest might be something to look into. The museums Uptown are pretty cool, especially the Mint Museum is pretty neat.

If you like craft beer definitely hit up Heist Brewing (you can take the light rail from downtown) There are also other breweries in the same area. Even if you don't like beer, right around the corner is Charlotte's best burger joint: http://brookssandwichhouse.com/ Warning it can get real busy on Fridays between 11:45 and 1:00 (Best weather day and it's outdoor "seating" only)! For nice restaurants I hear really good things about The Fig Tree, shouldn't be too much for an Uber if no rental car. Sports bars downtown I like Duckworth's, fantastic beer selection (noticing a theme here? lol)

Take your pick here

Nov 28, 2018, 6:54 PM

Although I can vouch for The Capital Grille and Del Frisco's

I don't recommend Mama Ricotta's (on the list of moderately-priced cuisine). The food was so-so and the service was lousy. Dresslers is a definite one though.

Nov 28, 2018, 7:17 PM [ in reply to I took my son here a couple years ago and was pretty ]

Everything depends on location and cost but my wife and I are big foodies/drinkers. Have a blast. Fyi most top notch places are a 10-15 uber food and drink wise. Best of CLT isnt in downtown/uptown as we call it IMO

1 Fig Tree- More upscale- Fantastic
2 Good Foods on Montford - Southern Tapas amazing
3 Baku - Asain Fusion pricey but unique
4 Mimosa is uptown Southern and Seafood get the trout
5 Fin and Fino is a seafood tapas uptown - newer and awesome.

Southend is where to go for breweries. Old Meck is a German style venue w good food. Beer is ok not special.
Wooden robot beer is better to me.

Noda- Noda brewery and birdsong are the best.

As another poster mentioned Fahrenheit is a great view. Over priced so just get one drink.

Also fyi hornets play at 7 friday night if you need more sports.

Re: Solid list plus:

Nov 28, 2018, 10:40 PM

Not sure where you are staying or how long but:

Southend/light rail:
Leroy Fox is quite good
Olde Meck Brewery
Sugar Creek brewing
Queen City Social
Seoul Meat Co
Mac's and Southbound

Uptown:
Duckworths
Asbury
Capitol Grille

Recreation:
National Whitewater Center is best if weather works
GoPro kart tracks in Mooresville
Discovery place uptown is good, nature center is separate and not as expansive.

Also, CU Alumni is having some kind of event at Unknown Brewing close to stadium.

Have an awesome trip!

If you like sports, beer, and cheesesteaks, duckworth’s on tryon is an awesome place.

For bbq Queen City bbq is decent.

I wouldn’t go to whisky river for anything but drinks, food was disgusting.

Hey Soy!

I am so very happy that your daughter is doing so well. I know that a tremendous number of Tnetters were praying for you and your family. Just being with her will be the best of all. Have the time of your lives, and bring us back a win!

If I wasn't so old and fat, I'd have cut a flip when I read this post!!!!!!!

I am soooo excited for both of you!!!

I'll have my oldest son, his bride and her brother with me. It will be a glorious night, even if a little rain falls! It's 27 degrees right now in NC where I live. It should be much warmer by Saturday night!

Enjoy coming eastward & Go Tigers!!!

I have lived in Charlotte for the last 10 years

Nov 28, 2018, 9:47 PM

and I got nothing. There are some good suggestions though. I go to the same ole hole in the wall places. I do love Amalie's French Bakery and may can hit up Cabo Fish Taco as well that is across the street, which is on NoDa. If you go, the Salted Caramel Brownies are the best! I hope you guys have a great trip!

Hey Soy, glad to know that your daughter is able to get out and about after what sounded like a pretty serious scare.

I don't know her interests, but Charlotte has malls and an aquarium and ice skating. If she's at all into Downton Abbey or similar historical drama, Biltmore House is a 2-hour drive and is now decorated for Christmas. The near-by town of McAdenville is pretty well known for its Christmas lights, but you need to be at that exit before 6 pm to drive through in any kind of reasonable time. There are outlet malls in several directions if she's a shopper.

Whatever you end up doing, hope you two create some wonderful memories that you can both enjoy for years to come!

I'm sure there are some great local spots. I remember seeing a burger place near the stadium that looked pretty cool and I would imagine there are plenty of decent BBQ places and Mexican, Italian or Asian restaurants. But also keep in mind some of the chains that should be "safe" choices like Panera, McAlister's Deli, IHOP, Cracker Barrel, Starbucks, Firebirds and Fridays. Wherever you end up, have fun!
