I have a legit question about fan support...

Jan 22, 2017, 9:42 PM

I'm genuinely asking because I don't know the answer. Why do some of you suggest that more fan support = more winning? How would a greater number of fans directly correlate to a greater number of victories and has any other team set that precedent? Is there a model this Clemson program can follow?

Thanks

Obviously an excited crowded packed house helps..

with a home court advantage. That's a given. That said, we would have still sucked under CBB overall. A quality product and they place will be crowded. It all feeds off of each other. I am sure jIam ust not getting your sarcasm.

No, no sarcasm. I'm genuinely curious. I can understand the energy but what would our team do at an away game in a hostile environment? I totally get firing up our guys and think that can help to an extent. I guess I'm more interested if there was ever a program that began winning by sheer fan support or was it the coach? Kinda like the chicken and the egg. Which comes first?

i think the weather had a role in the smaller crowd

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If the Tigers were sitting at 14-4 or 13-5 going into that

Jan 23, 2017, 1:17 PM

game last night weather would not have been a factor on the crowd size. We'd be in the midst of building a solid tournament resume and the energy would have been a lot different. But we weren't, we're not, and right now it hardly matters.

Go Tigers. Please win again.

Home Field/Court Advantage is Real....

A packed house makes a difference - especially in collegiate athletics.

Ask the players if fans make a difference.

I think you'll find out they say they do.

But good play is what gets a packed house.

Bottom line ... players play, because the fans are watching

Jan 23, 2017, 9:03 AM

Players crave the attention and the adoration of the fans. And the more fans, the greater their enthusiasm.

There is always some element of "playing just for the love of the game", but the fact is that games would rarely take place if the stadium were empty of fans.

And on a more mercenary note, at the NFL level ticket sales and TV viewership pays the players exorbitant salaries, so the players are once again playing for the fans and cannot do without them.

Players play the game, but the fans are the reason that they play.

Clemson fans like most fanbases are great front-runners

Jan 23, 2017, 9:27 AM

I distinctly remember sitting in DV at the end of Hatfield's

and West's

and Bowden's tenures

and seeing a good 15 to 25k of empty seats. It's not a good look.

I personally was against the remodel of Littlejohn, and thought it was money poorly spent.

I also believe we should have looked at making Bon Secours our permanent home

because the Greenville area can and will support a team better no matter the winning or losing.

And $68 million would have paid for a lot of free transport of students to an off-campus venue.

(Can anyone say "in-flight meal"? )

I personally do not think that Clemson fans will EVER fully and consistently support basketball

to the tune of 9k a night IN Clemson.

And they certainly won't do it with anything less than a Top 15 team.

So I am not so much about 'winning' as I am about

what venue can we consistently fill the seats so that our program

has the feel of good, enthusiastic fan support

regardless the wins or losses. THAT'S a good look.

thing. Bigger crowds would probably lead to better play, but it takes better play to entice bigger crowds to come out. I feel about basketball right now like I felt about football TB's last season. I think it gets worse before it gets better, unfortunately. Certainly do not advocate any sort of in-season change for basketball at this time, although we are not far from rock bottom.

I don't think the team is as bad you are implying. Outside of the game against Louisville they have been in every game. The main issue is they do not know how to close a game out and win, which falls on Brownell. I honestly thought we had a really good team before conference play started, still think the talent is there, but it's too late and I think its going to cost Brownell his job.

the guys to play really solid defense, and the knock was always that we needed just a tad more scoring to be competitive. Now, we seem to have some scoring, but defense has taken a hike. Seems like everyone we play has their best shooting game of the year against us now. I wish I could stay optimistic, but a turnaround of mammoth proportions would be required at this point in time to salvage this season.

In laymen's terms - it's hard to convince yourself that your team doesn't suck & people care when half the seats are empty.
