A&M reality check

We're a totally different team on offense this year (with TL at QB full time) than we were last year when we faced A&M. Also, Mond has won one true road game his whole career - last year by 3 against SC. They were pretty terrible in true road games minus a close loss at Auburn. They got beat convincingly by Miss State and got smoked by Bama. So, they went 1-3 in true road games, nearly 0-4. Good luck in Death Valley.

Also, they had bad moments at home too. They barely beat Kentucky in OT, and they beat Arkansas by 7.

Just because last year's game was close doesn't mean this year's game automatically will be too, and I don't think A&M's players realize that. They had the game of their life last year with a ton of luck on tipped balls, etc., and still lost at home to us. We lost a lot of guys on defense but so have they.

I'm hoping we run them in the ground. That secondary is suspect, and their o-line has been criticized. They also don't have Williams at RB anymore. And Venables has had a lot more tape to study Mond now too. Not too mention we can shred defenses with the run and pass now as opposed to last year when we faced them with KB at QB.

They're coming into Death Valley confident and disrespectful based off of a close game last year. Last year doesn't mean anything.

Spot the ball.

We really need to play well especially Trevor because we are gonna get the Aggies' best shot and they are talented.

Oh yeah, I agree and am nervous as well. We have to be focused and play well because A&M is a good team. But I'm just saying from an A&M perspective, they are overconfident based off of last year's game which means nothing. I think being at home is going to help a lot too.

Great thoughts and I looked at the same thing about road games this morning. TAMU was pretty inconsistent last year and Im not convinced they are good enough of a team at this point to go on the road in a big game and win. They'll be hyped and will make plays but not sure how that plays out over 4 qtrs for them.

In our game last year, Wallace literally was an inch away from deflecting the ball on one of their TDs and dropped the game clinching INT on their last TD pass....he dropped it and Rogers came up with the ricochet from Wallace's hands. Those plays count and we benefit from them too but its not like they gave us the game...which their players firmly believe.

My only worry is that the turnover in our defense really shows up and get in a shootout. But, BVs history in roster turnover tells us the only real change in production is the names on the field, not the stats.

Yeah, that's my worry too (about the defense). I'm hoping you're right that BV has his guys dialed in and ready to go.

I think there are a lot of differences this year. Some not good for us, but more good than bad. Mostly the fact that they got TL very early in his career, had the rain, and home field advantage last year. This year, all of that is our advantage. I’d say the only area of concern is how many points can they score with an improved (on paper) offense going against a retooled defense of ours. Not sure about a blowout here, but feel quite confident that we will our score them no matter what they come with. At the end of the day (as is the case with most teams we play), we have better personnel at every position on the field. I’m Dabo we trust!

are considering its only one season from our last meeting. We have a very different and establish qb and running game and a new defensive front. They are very different defensively. I think our offense carries the day against their D since thery have some secondary issues

Last year's game was over hyped by almost everyone because

it was the one thing the talking heads could latch on to, to try and ding Clemson and ignoring the dominance the Tigers showed starting the 2nd half of the Syracuse game on. And now a year later after they are still singing the same song and ignoring everything that happened after that game last year - these are different teams now, Clemson is not at a disadvantage this time with film to prepare from, it is at our house and this time we have one QB and a definitive idea of who we are as an offense.

A close game wouldn't shock me, but a big Tiger win in blowout and dominant fashion wouldn't shock me even less.

The A&M propping up is mostly wishful thinking on behalf of the media and the Aggies themselves.

Vegas sure doesn't buy it and neither do I.

Finally someone who gets it, minus the stats, it's basically what I have been saying the whole time. A lot of Mond's completions were lucky throws and catches with him running for his life or in the grasp. Right there toward the end of the game where KB missed a wide open Amarri with the pass coming up 10 yards short that would have gave us a 1st down. Plus bc of KB's inability to throw accurate passes and not being able to find his open receivers made that game much much closer than it should have been. A lot of folks still don't like hearing it, but KB was less than average QB compare to many we have had, and IMHO, if HJ or CB would have been given enough time and worked with as a starter, we would have been a better team with either of them over KB I think, especially with Brandon Streeter as our QB coach bc I believe that Brandon is a dang good QB coach, and I believe the reason that KB didn't get better with Brandon is bc he didn't want to change his true dual threat style as a QB!!!

Watched last years game last night, two TD ending drives

would have stalled out due to no-holding calls.

One where their OL landed on and stayed on top of either Wilkens or Ferrell for 2 seconds. How is that not called? Others where they had our DL hooked around the neck as we ran past them to Monde.

I hope that crew received a letter of reprimand. But I think our DL was so talented last year, the refs just let them play through it to even the playing field.

I was only able to catch the 4th quarter of the replay last night

Posted: Sep 6, 2019 2:10 PM

But I saw 2 blatant holds by atm that weren’t called. That was the 4th quarter alone. Oh, and want to talk about lucky? Mond played with a horseshoe up his rear. I’m pretty sure that horseshoe has been gone for a while now. And we dropped 2 incredibly easy INTs thrown by Mond. Oh, and Spiers tried to give them the game with a 20 yard punt.

Different, more realistic story this year.

Re: Watched last years game last night, two TD ending drives

You’re talking about an ACC crew, the same crew that said the ball was fumbled into the end zone when it clearly showed that the ball went out of bounds before the pylon. Don’t forget your WR’s pushing our DB to make the catch and score! Clemson was gassed by the 4th quarter, you scored zero points.
Mond was so lucky that he threw for 430 yards on your vaunted defense. Oh and Etienne ran for a whoosh 45 yards ???????

Look, every sane Aggie respects this Clemson team. You are the defending national champs, you guys have an awesome team on offense, your WR and RB are studs along with Lawrence at QB, very balanced offense!
From a fans point of view, love going to Death Valley....like A&M it is an awesome, unique environment.

All I am saying is give your opponent some credit. A&M should have won that game, it got away from A&M. I think that’s why you see an A&M team that is ready to play this game.

A&M is NOT the same team that it was under Sumlin, like him or not J. Fisher is a heck of a coach and he has changed the teams loser attitude that permitted under Sumlin ??

As an A&M fan I am realistic in that it’s going to take everything we got to beat you guys.
Am I going to be surprise if we beat you....honesty no. But I will not be surprise if Clemson beats us by 2 scores. It’s why they play the game. I hope it’s a great game and there are no injuries!!

Win or lose I will remain a fan of your fine university and football team!

And maybe the line is a little high. But all things considered, the line isn’t that overblown. The points that have been repeated over and over are correct - you had some very fortunate big plays go your way and that’s ok. Fortune favors the well-prepared. But the multiple no-calls on holding were ridiculous. Also, I like our chances with Trevor Lawrence and a seasoned Ross and Higgins against you secondary depth in the 4th quarter in Death Valley.
Bottom line - considering overall talent and depth, you’ll have to find a lot of good luck again to pull out a win in Death Valley tomorrow... because Kelly B ain’t gonna be fumbling on the goal line or overthrowing wide open receivers tomorrow.

And in that case I like our chances of busting some big plays. Or ETN and LJD could get loose and bring about similar results. Too many weapons... and we live to beat the almighty SEC. Can’t forget that.

I can’t really argue with any of what you wrote!

The refs were horrible, both ways. -yes I saw the holdings you saw and to be honest...I hated that!! Call them on both sides, be consistent!! We got away with a few obvious ones ??

On the other hand Clemson WR had 2 clear offensive pushes that were key plays in the game for you.

Good points on A&M’s secondary on the 4th quarter, I hope and pray we are controlling the tempo of the game and it’s your team sucking air on the 4th.

Hey, hopefully Lawrence will be as sloppy as he was vs GT for our sake!! : )

A&M needs to play their game and hope for some breaks going their way.

If your Oline didn’t get away with holding all night the game would not have been close.

Posted: Sep 6, 2019 6:25 PM

The dropped interceptions coupled with some of the luckiest breaks I have ever seen by a QB made a more of a game out of it than it should have been. The better team won even though a perfect storm of circumstances almost made it go the other way. Clemson won the championship last year and your players are “surprised.” Maybe because they played a team that was completely different by the end of the season. Your players don’t seem to be smart enough to realize that. I have a feeling that when all is said and done tomorrow night they will. They do not respect our team but they will.

I like A&M. Always have but not this week. You guys were lucky to be able to make a game out of it last year. I guess your players think they were better than Alabama last year because they played a close game with us. SMH Unreal.

Luck is part of the game, you create your own luck.

The best QB on the field was Mond, period! 430 yards vs your defense. Sorry that’s not luck.
A&M left 10 points on the field (missed field goal in our first drive and the BS call on the 4th that would have given us 1st and goal at the one.

How many points did Clemson missed? 7? The fumble on 4th down?

I don’t think our players are “surprised” (whatever that means)

You think our team at the end of the season was the same as the team that played vs Clemson? It’s not a one way street where “only” Clemson improved. ???????

Alabama was favorite by a TD over Clemson, nobody expected Clemson to bear Alabama let alone spank them......that’s why you play the game. Just ask Tennessee and Missouri about betting lines! ??

The “surprised” is a direct quote from one of your players.

Posted: Sep 6, 2019 8:01 PM

Sorry man but when drives are extended due to blatant holding and dropped interceptions yes that is luck. When tipped balls are caught for TDs that’s luck. I’m sorry but what you don’t seem to grasp is that the team you played in September was a completely different animal than the one you would’ve faced about five or six weeks later. You guys are fooling yourselves if you don’t believe that. Heck Syracuse has as much reason to beat their chests as you do. Wake up and face the reality that your team was not as good as Clemson last year. A flakey early season game doesn’t put you on the same level as Clemson or Bama. The way the season played out proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Keep thinking the team you had at the beginning or end of the season was as good as Clemson’s. You’re dead wrong.

I understand that you see things through maroon colored glass but I see a team in orange that went 15-0 and has a national championship trophy after throttling every opponent we faced in every game after Trevor Lawrence was named the starter and was not injured. Admittedly they didn’t start out the season as a great team but I’ve watched CFB for nearly 35 years and Clemson’s run last year was nothing short of remarkable. One of the most dominant teams I have ever seen by the end of the season. Sorry but A&M was nowhere near that level.

They remind me an awful lot of Louisville in 2016 . They came into death valley like they were going to abuse Clemson , leave us feeling inferior .
Of course they lost sight of the facts that affect everyone in Death Valley ...our noise and them boys !

Clemson covers the spread and then some .

The difference this year....

Posted: Sep 6, 2019 10:58 AM

...is we really pull away in the 4th quarter instead of imploding on their "fortunate" plays.

I re-watched the game last night and they had outstanding good fortune in the 4th quarter. Their talent had a lot to do with it as well, but their talent had nothing to do with tipped balls instead of intercepted balls.

I don't disagree with any of that but the reality is that we don't really know what kind of Clemson team we have yet this season either. Slapping GT around doesn't really tell us much. I think most of us will start feeling more confident about this team if a similar result occurs tomorrow.

If the refs call them or holding this year

Posted: Sep 6, 2019 11:25 AM

Tigers by 28. Watching the replay last night I had forgotten how much they blatantly held and the refs let it go. Can't fault the team - if the refs aren't calling it, it's not a penalty, but it WAS ridiculous...

Re: A&M reality check

IMO A&M will come out on fire and as the heat starts to wear on them and we roll big bodies up front they will fade in the second half. I also looked at their road games last year where they were not good, and yes, they were the recipients of some gratuitous plays against us that they didnt make again the rest of the season...I have total faith in our coaching staff and players.

49-23

Re: A&M reality check

Heat? Texas is hotter and just as humid as South Carolina so I wouldn’t count on that at all.
Another thing, Clemson did nothing on the 4th quarter against A&M so again, I wouldn’t count on wearing out our OL or DL.

Can’t wait to watch the game tomorrow.

Re: A&M reality check

And just remember - if Mond puts the ball in jeopardy this year, one of our CBs is a natural WR with freakish open field running abilities. It could be a house call if he is off target this year.

Rather than compare last year Clemson on the road at TAMU, compare TAMU on the road at SCar. Look how that game turned out. And then remember how we are built compared to SCar.

To me, that realization is better than melatonin. Night night!

Re: A&M reality check

A lot of hype, but on the field, it will be decided by more than 14. I feel good about that.

We win, but no blowout. We are also a totally different team on defense. We picked up a lot on O and lost some on D.
