How many championships would the SEC

Jul 26, 2014, 6:44 PM

have if they didn't have teams start the season in the top 10?

In that regard, I believe maybe the conference is "over rated" although that is probably the wrong word for it. (I started a new thread on the over rated question to pose it this way)

But, common sense says if you have several teams that start the season in the top 10, of course going to the championship game will be easier.

It's why I have always thought and said there should be absolutely NO polling until at least week 4 or so. I feel that would even the playing field some what.

Agree with all you say, but it probably would have

little effect on the MNC. I cant think of any sec team that won it because they began highly rated while not deserving to be. Bama is Bama. And the years Auburn won it they deserved it in terms of performamce. But yes, the total year end rankings would be different.

that LSU-Bama rematch business was BS.***

Yeah , the 2nd SEC championship (aka the rematch ) was a load.
Only BCS NCG I didnt watch.

Ever. That one was bird excrement.

Maybe, but that was not the question. Pre season

Jul 26, 2014, 9:42 PM

rankings proabaly had little to do with that, as one team was undefeated at that point, and the other had one loss, to that team. OK State was the only other team in the running, and whether they or Bama should have been in was certainly controversial. Whether that was "BS" or simply debatable is a good question, but pre seanon polls didnt cause it.

A better question is how many titles would the SEC have if CFB had a playoff system like every other sport and an SEC team wasn't hand placed in the game every year?

Many less if they'd had a playoff system for the last decade***

I agree with your premiss, and I think it begs another Q

Jul 26, 2014, 8:56 PM

Why do we have pre-season rankings at all?

IMO, They only serve to skew the rankings.

Exactly my point.

I think common sense says if a preseason unranked team goes undefeated but two teams that were ranked top 5 to start the season and both go undefeated, that unranked undefeated team is screwed.

The high ranking defiantly caused the rematch. Without beating top teams who were over ranked bama would not have had the impressive resume that lead to them being picked over ok st. It's not a matter of a high ranked team staying ranked it's the one loss team who gets a huge boost from being the first team to beat an over ranked team who ends up with 3-4 losses. SEC teams get a boost in SOS every year because multiple teams start highly ranked and get beat by middle teams who quickly climb the rankings.

I don't know about the championships question, but I agree

Jul 26, 2014, 9:01 PM

Polling should not start until about week 4. Preseason polls are worthless.

Just to be contrarian what did AU start off last year?***

They had the chance to play all of those " highly ranked"

Jul 26, 2014, 11:13 PM

Sec opponents.

Don't think that's a big deal? What is the last team to make it to the champ game without being ranked preseason by a major poll? I cant name one.
