NEW CFB PLAYOFF FORMAT
Dec 7, 2018, 11:01 AM

There is a way to stop all of the crying each year the CFB is announced. Realign the power 5 into 8 Conferences and only the conference winners get into the playoff. This is what I see the conferences looking like. It is mostly aligned geographically to reduce the travel requirements for student/atheletes and costs for schools. It also requires each team in a conference to play each other yearly and realigns some old rivalry games.
Alabama Clemson Arkansas UNC Auburn South Carolina Texas NC St LSU Georgia Texas Tech Duke Miss St GA Tech Baylor Wake Forest Ole Miss Florida Texas A&M Virginia Tennessee Florida St TCU Va Tech Vanderbilt Miami Nebraska UCF
Kentucky Syracuse Iowa Oregon UCLA Louisville Rutgers Iowa St Oregon St USC West Virginia BC Kansas Washington Stanford Pitt Minnesota Kansas St Washington St Arizona Penn St Purdue Oklahoma BYU Arizona St Maryland Northwestern OK St Utah Colorado ND Winconsin Missouri Utah St BYU

I can hear the SEC commish now...

Even though we are one of the most lucrative organizations in all of sports for our member schools, we feel it is in the best interest of college football to completely dissolve and our members be reorganized into new conferences. Thank you, and goodbye.

He does seem interested in trying to help the teams from other conferences.
He was heard recently trying to help UCF get into the CFP by giving them scheduling advice that worked for his conference in basketball.

You said 8 conferences but just see 2 conferences that appear to be about 30 teams each.
I'm confused.....

I have a scheme that would allow the expansion of the CFP, keep (or likely increase) the conference championship revenue and keep the bowls intact. Additionally, this would make the first weekend of December as important as the last weekend in Dec… some tweaking required I’m sure. Can you imagine the ad revenue?
Eliminate the Conference Championship games. They don’t mean anything to the CFP (yet). (Hang on…)?Instead of a Conference Championship each Power 5 conference “hosts” a Playoff game instead, same venue, same date.?1 plays 10, 2 plays 9, etc. with the nuances below.?Highest CFP ranking team in that Conference is the home team…?That leaves 5 teams, 5 plays 4 at a CFP bowl game second week of December regionally tied to the higher ranked team.?Keeps the calendar the same wrt to school schedules/student workload, etc. Same number of games played (except 5 and 6)?Alternately only 4 games are played but that would leave one conference out of the mix.
If they were to be played today, using the CFP poll: rank / team vs team / host conference / location #1 Alabama vs #10 Florida / SEC / Atlanta / Dec 1 #2 Clemson vs #9 Washington / ACC / Charlotte / Dec 1 #3 Notre Dame vs #8 UCF / Pac-10 / Santa Clara / Nov 30 #4 OU vs #7 Michigan / Big 12 / Arlington / Dec 1 #5 Georgia vs #6 Ohio State / Big-10 / Indianapolis / 1 Dec
Alternately only the 4 highest ranked teams get the in with no change in the number of games, lowest ranking conference does not participate in CFP, don't think that would float so 5 and 6 need to add a game regionally tied to the #5 team.
Revenue split may be an issue, how does the ND share get split, what if the conference does not have a rep? If the 5 game were to play out, winner of Georgia-Ohio State plays winner of OU-Michigan for the fourth spot 2 weeks later or after finals week in a bowl game at a regional NFL location, I’m sure one of the big sites would love to host the play in game… Thoughts?

I have a idea, Bama and Clemson gets a bye why the other four fight for a chance to play the top two in a six team playoffs.
