When the Senate was established, there were population differences among the states, but not to the degree there is now.

When the 13 states were formed, Virginia was the largest with about 20% of population and Vermont, Maine, Delaware, and Georgia were the smallest with about 2% of population. The median population % was 5% of the total.

I'm federalist in nature, so I don't there has to be a population balance versus seat in the Senate, but I do understood the point of view of those who do.

and a whopping 20% of the entire nation at the time, compared to those 4 that had only 10% each of their population, I suspect they considered full well the respect for the very large being balanced by the small when it came to delegating weight to the Senate.

Electoral and Senate math hasn't always gone my way but there's a sublime sense to the matter when it comes to balancing density versus the great wide open. A bit of check and balance at play there also. Those old guys did all right.
