Asking if someone watched football Saturday can be dangerous

Before my wife and I teed off yesterday morning, I asked the starter if he had watched any football Saturday and his reply was "I grew in the South and I don't want to sound like a racist, but this Black Lives Matter thing with people wanting to be given things has ruined football for me."
Afterwards, I asked my wife why this guy felt the need to explode with such a thought at somebody like that. I have noticed this kind of unprovoked opinion sharing from Trump supporters many times before.
It is amazing to me what the simple phrase "Black Lives Matter" does to some white people.

objects to “BLM” is simply a racist? YOU asked HIM if he watched football. You now imply that this is a person you have some familiarity with, and because he said the BLM stuff has turned him off from sports, you think he’s a racist. Has he made racist comments before? Or are you so eaten up with this idiology that you have no capacity to consider that one might not be racist but have lost the passion for a sporting event due to the nonstop politics that have become a part of it that this person might not agree with?
