I brought this up a few years ago and it's still true...

Dec 5, 2016, 7:19 PM

SCAR has never played in a major bowl game, and that's a very short list. Especially for large public state schools who have been fielding teams for 100+ years. Even the traditional bottom-feeders that immediately come to mind have all had their day in the sun, at some point. Temple?...Sugar Bowl in 1935. Indiana?...Rose Bowl in 1968. Rice?...6 major bowls, 4 Cotton, an Orange & a Sugar. Kentucky has 3...Orange, Cotton, Sugar. Kansas?...3 Orange Bowls. Wake?...Orange.

####, even Duke was badazz for a while, from 1939-1961 they played in 6 major bowls (2 Rose, 2 Orange, Cotton, Sugar).

SCAR? Zip, zilch, nada.

It takes some research, and I certainly haven't finished, but so far I've only found SCAR, Vandy, & Iowa St.

When you consider that SCAR is a large public state university (not some small private school) located in the state capital, that has fielded a team for 124 years, and has always poured tons of money and resources into their football program... and they have NEVER played in a major bowl... I'm not sure there is another college in the country with that level of historical futility. It really boggles the mind when you think about it.

Their mascot is a chicken. A CHICKEN!!! To me that pretty much sums it up.

Actually, their mascot is a capon. Enough said.

Actually, their mascot is an American hero and Patriot

Dec 5, 2016, 10:47 PM

THomas Sumter, the gamecock.

But way back when, some geniuses at USuC decided to use a chicken to represent him.

Pathetic.

Teams with fowl mascots simply don't win titles

Dec 5, 2016, 7:30 PM

By my research (most likely flawed) only one team with a flying mascot has every claimed a national title. Hint, it wasn't SCAR.

Flying FOUL, yep...Miami. Count all things flying and then you can add GT.

The best stat ever, and I share it regurlarly...

We have more bowl wins, then they have of bowl appearances.

Let that sink in considering they have been playing football a little longer than us.

Coots think the Outback Bowl is a pristine bowl.

Just like they think Outback is a pristine restaurant.

I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created, and with them the animals,
The birds and the creatures that move along the ground, for I regret that I have made them.

it certainly has boggled the Coots' minds....

Chicken curse. More eerily real than anyone likes to admit.

But hey, even Cleveland has had a few winners lately, so maybe there's some hope, however slim and distant, for the ol' Coots to see a big boy bowl someday...? Ain't in the cards right now, obviously.

That's what happens when you hire a baseball coach to run your football program.

And we have twice as many conference championships as they

Dec 5, 2016, 9:16 PM

have bowl wins, same number of national titles as they have conference championships, we have same number of bowl wins as they have APPEARANCES. We now have more playoff appearances than they will ever have. What a rival...

They should consider dropping to the Southern Conference

Dec 5, 2016, 10:17 PM

It would be so much more practical for them and a place where they could compete in the top half of the conference. They would be behind the Citadel, but I feel strongly they could compete with, and possibly beat at times, teams like Mercer or Samford. South Carolina still wouldn't ever get to a major bowl, but the FCS playoffs would be exciting for their fans.

Re: They should consider dropping to the Southern Conference

Dec 5, 2016, 10:31 PM

I was considering the chance the USuck chicks could actually rejoin the ACC along with Notre Dame to make a sixteen team conference. Their fans would quickly understand how misguided their SEC judgements had been! Clemson, FSU, Ga. Tech, Pitt, UL, Va. Tech, Miami, and UNC would prevail among other programs.

Dec 6, 2016, 10:49 AM

Outback Bowls under Holtz as "back-to-back New Year's Day bowls". They were trying to elevate them into "major bowl" status ... because for decades, all 4 of the major bowls were played on New Year's Day. Whenever I heard that, I'd ask - "New Year's Day Bowl? I never heard of that one". I'd make them say the word Outback. LOL
