Serious question: Is it healthy for young men to be carrying

300lbs or more?
When William Perry came here 30 years ago, it created a big stir because he was right at 300lbs; now we have 14 players 300lbs or better. People aren't naturally that much bigger now (only 30 years later). While weight training and such is light years ahead of where it was then, I'm sure the drastic weight difference can't be accounted for by players packing on an additional 40-50-lbs of muscle. Face it, it's fat.
I've read about guys who, after graduating, struggle to lose the weight they piled on as linemen in college football, creating significant long term health problems. I realize that we MUST have guys this big to compete, so I'm not complaining. Just asking the question.

I think it could possibly be a concern, but one thing to consider is that all of the guys over 300lbs are also over 6ft tall. William Perry has had health related issues later in life, but not sure that can be attributed to his weight. Not sure what he was listed at in the game day programs, but the Fridge was 6ft, max. I had a class in the same building as him as a freshman, and he was shorter than me and I'm 6ft.

330 and 360 pounds depending on who was reporting it.. He was listed at 6' 3" but not even close to that. This was his second season and he could still dunk a basketball!

I think the coaches encourage them all to be trim.

There is no football advantage for someone (not even an OL or DL) to carry extra fat. It just slows players down. It's even worse than just strapping extra metal weights to your body because your body actually has to pump blood to fat, thereby causing fatique.
I frequently read about college and NFL coaches demanding that their players (even OLs and DLs) be trim. Many NFL coaches place financial penalties on the players for coming in overweight. So I think it's safe to say that the players are not being encouraged to add weight through fat-- though of course they are being encouraged to add weight through muscle.

they are ok.......... Hairston is 6-7 300 plus pounds, so that is pretty proportional. I am not a health expert, but the taller you are the more weight you can carry without being obese (hope that make sense)

No growth spurt. I see KP down town from time to time, he's more like 5'10'' in real life... but I guess a lot of the heights are fudged a bit.
