Anyone else hold their breath on every Amari punt catch?

Oct 21, 2018, 9:12 AM

Still seems to struggle identifying the ball and catching in front of his body... over-the-shoulder catches are good for highlight reels not casual punt fielding

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I feel my bung hole clinch up tight during every punt return

Oct 21, 2018, 9:18 AM

unless Renfrow is back there to catch it.

It's pronounced "L Heff A" and it means "The Boss".

Amari has looked pretty #### good except for a couple earlier this year.

Not really, glad to have someone with the potential to break one back there.

I did during the Syracuse game after it was evident that Amari was struggling catching the ball. A lot of us probably saw the muffed punt coming with the way he was having trouble earlier in the game. Outside of that game he has been very good holding onto the ball.

Admittedly, I was always worried when Ray Ray was back there. He fumbled twice on a kickoff and punt early in the Buffalo game last week. I don't know why he continues to struggle.

I am never nervous about Amari

Oct 21, 2018, 9:28 AM

After all, I watched Ray Ray field punts for several years.

FWIW: The SU punter was bringing rain with those Ray Guy punts. It's amazing that anyone can catch those.

That said, I caught myself saying, "If you don't muff this punt, we're good. Oh carp". But I'm still okay with Amari catching punts. Renfrow is playing his last year with us (sniff, sniff...I'm okay now), so someone has to take over this important role.

And because of the fumble-itis, Ray Ray was left off the active roster for today's game. He wasn't allowed to travel with the team.

He has had two conseecutive games without incident . Nothing to worry about until there's new stuff to worry about on those returns .
Remember too , the Syracuse punter and the A&M punter kicked the ball into the stratosphere , and that's only a very slight exaggeration .

Balls kicked extremely high can have a tendency to move a little crazy coming down .
An average guy trying to catch one would be funny to watch .

No ... he’s had one bad game. Otherwise just fine. And he

Oct 21, 2018, 9:42 AM

And he actually gives us a chance at breaking a return.

As long as we do not face any more Ray Guy Award candidates I think he will be just fine. He admitted that the height/hang time gave him fits and I suspect given his work ethic he has found a way to use a Jugg machine to practice that aspect.

Because we field nobody that can replicate that in practice, just saying.

'Cuse punter's gonna make $$ next year. He's in the Guy/Robey mold...so is aTm's punter!

Re: Anyone else hold their breath on every Amari punt catch?

No but DK made me nervous catching that one punt inside the 15 ABOVE his head! Dang man!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, not really. The NC State punter was kicking low

Oct 21, 2018, 10:05 AM

line drives. Those are easier to catch because you can use your body. The Cuse punter was punting the ball a mile into the air and it was coming almost straight down. Those are more difficult to field because they come almost straight down on the hands and they can be difficult to judge.

Re: No, not really. The NC State punter was kicking low

Oct 21, 2018, 10:23 AM

I was thinking that punts like that should probably not be fielded anyway because at that angle they are probably going to bounce backwards and you’ll pick up more yards that way than on a return?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've been holding my breath during games long enough.

Oct 21, 2018, 1:38 PM

We're good enough to overcome just about anything now.

Not nearly as nerve wracking as watching Ray Ray field punts was.
