If you were wondering when the day's weirdest thing would

Jul 9, 2020, 1:39 PM

come along, stop. This might be it.

In the car today, for some unknown reason I began to think about our current political situation like a chess game. Each player begins knowing that at the end of the game most of his 16 pieces will be gone. The game is therefore a series of decisions regarding what pieces to sacrifice or trade to put oneself in a desired strategic position.

So, the typical Lounge right (we'll call them "R") and the typical lounge left (we'll all them "D") face each other, each with an array of pieces. The requirement is for each side to engage in 5 trades in order to arrive at a final array and strategic position. By coin flip, R is white (no comment, please) and goes first.

1. In a surprise move, R puts Trump up for trade.
D proposes Pelosi.
R rejects, instead wants the entire Squad plus Sen Duckworth and Rep Schiff.
D accepts before R can change it's mind.

2. D puts Pelosi back up for trade.
R offers Graham
D rejects, wants Pence, Rep Jordan and Nunes
R accepts before the words are out.

3. R proposes McConnell for Nadler and Clyburn.
D accepts.

With two moves left, D says, "Is anyone left you really want or are willing to give up?"
R: "No".
D: "Us neither."
D: "Do you really care who wins from this point?"
R: "Yeah, a little, but not enough to sit here and fight about."
D proposes they all go get drunk at the tiddy bar, and off they go.

We seem to be fighting over our more extreme elements, though both sides would be willing to give them up.

You lost me when you said we were playing

chess, then you talked about trading pieces. I don't play chess, but I don't think that's how it works.

not a chess player either, but I think it's - i'll give you my rook, but i'm taking your knight first.

It very much is. Sacrificing is most of the deal.***

I always thought once the pieces were gone

Jul 9, 2020, 2:18 PM

they were gone, like checkers. Oh well, like I said, I've never played.

Yes, but most often in chess, you're going to move

your knight to take their bishop, which they have defended, so you're going to lose your knight the next turn. That's the trade you made, your knight for their bishop.

I know we're talking 101 here, but yes, to get piece X to

position B, it's going to cost pieces Y and Z.

For some reason I thought about two people playing chess with political pieces, and it occurred to me that many of us would end up at pretty much the same point, each player willing to give up the pieces the other player wanted most, basically playing to an amicable draw.

Chess can end in draw, that's where we're headed!***
