Working from home today bc my crawl space is getting redone. Taking out all the old moldy insulation and replacing it then encapsulating the whole thing. Also had one major foundation beam that was not large enough and they have to replace and jack the house back up a few inches.
Got multiple estimates and went with the best sounding one, but dang it isn’t cheap. So much for my tax return money...

For $22K we were quoted for a full crawlspace encapsulation

and foam insulation on the roof of the attic. Were told our electric bill would be negligible. Like no more than $20-30 a month. Think it was around 16K for the encapsulation of the crawlspace, maybe a little more. Less to do the attic insulation.
Add in 15K of solar panels and profit.
I balked on all of it because 1)22K and 2) The lower electric bills from the foam insulation would be offset by a roof that lasts 10 less years.

and it happens usually once a day, whenever it's most inconvenient usually.
Oh, and in my post foam insulation underneath your roof raises the shingle temperature, shortening the life of your shingles. There's a question by how much, but it does raise the temp 10 or more degrees.

possible condensation in certain situations. There are similar options that you can tack to the rafters, but many have issues causing moisture.

Vapor Barrier did the trick for me and was much, much, much cheaper than encapsulation
