a chicken football player......And to think....Jim Thorpe lost ALL his Olympic medals for exactly the same issue...Every year, the NCAA suspends a few basketball players from Eastern Europe for violation of amateur status, when, in actuality, ALL the players from that part of the world play for "clubs" (if they're good) and receive compensation. The lines dividing professional and amateur have never been more blurred

not really...just 2 years
PERSONAL: Hayden Randle Hurst was born August 24, 1993... played for two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in the rookie Gulf Coast League, as a pitcher in 2013 and as a first baseman in 2014...

found it. google is a good thing. wasn't terry, it was rick
Rick Sofield was a star high school quarterback in Morristown, N.J., who turned down a football scholarship from Michigan to play professional baseball. He went on to become the 13th pick in the 1975 major league draft by the Minnesota Twins and eventually moved from shortstop to center field.
But after playing minor league ball and three seasons with the Twins, he turned back to football and enrolled at South Carolina. His path is essentially the reverse of the one being traveled by Smelley, who has abandoned a football career at South Carolina for a shot to play baseball at Alabama.
What did Sofield, now the baseball coach at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort, learn from his experience?
“It is much harder to go from football to baseball than baseball to football,” he said. “In football, you can create scenarios, you can spread the defense, you have the same three reads going back to pass. Playing baseball, you are seeing five different pitchers on five different days — all with different pitches, different velocities, different deliveries. The ball never bounces the same. New things come up every day in baseball. Once you learn to throw a spiral in football, you’ve got it.”
Sofield went through spring practice in 1983 with South Carolina and completed summer drills, but he was ruled ineligible before he played a game because he had enrolled briefly at the University of Minnesota. He became an assistant baseball coach at South Carolina, then began a 20-year career as a minor league manager and instructor, including a stint as the Yankees’ minor league field coordinator.
