It would be one thing if English was not such an irregular language. If vowel pronunciation was standardized like Spanish, it would be easy.
Could be just a simple mistake.

Both of his parents were Latino and his father had an accent. Having had several years of Spanish, I knew his name was pronounced Mah ree oh and always called him that.
His parents called him Meh ree oh.
They loved me and never seemed offended.
