How badly does Citadel AD need the 2020 game at Clemson?

Not sure about Citadel specifically, but I’ve heard many times that games with big pay-offs supply most of a small programs athletic department budget for the entire year.
It seems as if not playing in 2020 might hurt Clemson, it could completely devastate Citadel.

Yes.
The guys on SportsTalk SC have been asking that question of all the HCs of the state's smaller college football programs during their interviews this spring (SportsTalk SC is a U of SoKarliner-leaning show with one host a former Gamecock and another a Gamecock-promoting journalist )
The HCs have universally said they have no financial solutions in mind if the larger schools have to cancel their nonconference games or even worse their entire season.
Their programs would be very strapped, even worse than the big schools, if they only play conference games.
If Clemson funds 85 schollies on 4 home games drawing 75K people, the Tigers still profit. Yes, the numbers would be down, but still a profit.
However, if The Citadel funds 63 scholarships on 4 home games drawing 10K people, they go broke.
