Go back to the old goal posts

Sep 8, 2015, 10:43 AM

Look at the photo comparison!! Previously, the padding was about 10" thick, and the goal post base consisted of only about 8" diameter round solid metal. Now . . . the padding is 4" thick at best, and the base consists of approx. 16" X 18" rectangular solid metal!! Not only was there previously much less metal to run into, when the goal post base was round, players could deflect off of it and there was much less likelihood of hitting it "square".

Isn't it ironic that our current collapsible goal posts, which replaced the old goal posts following Clemson-FSU 2003, were intended to increase safety? I'd much rather have injured fans (they can choose whether or not they want to climb on the goal post) than broken necks. By the way I was one of the students that helped tear it down in 2003, and I still have a piece of that goal post in my office!

You want Clemson Fans to be prevented from going on the field? That's the only way they go back to the old goalpost.

Then come up with a better design

Sep 8, 2015, 10:51 AM

1" or so plate steel with 4" of padding? Really? What idiot came up with that design?

Two words...

Sep 8, 2015, 10:58 AM

Balsa wood.

Will break if a player hits it.
Will break if fans try to climb on it.
Will not hurt anyone if it falls on them.
100% biodegradable which will appease the anti-balloon faction.

It's a win, win, win, win situation.

How about no goal posts at all

Sep 8, 2015, 11:56 AM [ in reply to Then come up with a better design ]

Always go for it on fourth down. Always go for two. That would have alleviated all kicking concerns we had entering into this season.

No, he wants to be able to tear them down again.***

that doesn't make sense

Sep 8, 2015, 11:02 AM [ in reply to Re: Go back to the old goal posts ]

you think people are going to go on the goalposts every game?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What you and I think doesn't matter.

Sep 8, 2015, 11:13 AM

It's what the insurance and lawyers think that matter with the determinations.

yes!

Sep 8, 2015, 10:53 AM

the retractable goal posts are one of the most paranoid and unnecessary things in the entire country. They are massively expensive and now we have seen a much bigger safety risk for players

Or maybe just get DW to stop lobbing passes up that high

Sep 8, 2015, 11:11 AM

and leading his WR's into the goal posts. MW had already gotten inside leverage on the DB, there was no need to throw a lob pass up that high. Throw it to his shoulder pad area and MW never has to leave his feet and its an easy TD grab.

You are a feather covered loser.

So you just admitted that your actions broke MW's neck

Freak plays are going to happen

Sep 8, 2015, 12:20 PM

nothing you can do to stop it. Shoot, I remember when the endzone corners didn't have padding and when a player dove into cart that drives the field level camera. In 40 years this is the first injury I remember from hitting either a round or square goal post.
