Historical Clemson BBall numbers

Mar 14, 2019, 12:59 PM

Some raw numbers for contemplation and perspective

Coach_____________Years___#__Win%_Normalized for 30 games______Rank by win%

Banks McFadden____46-55___10__.39____12-18___________9
Press Maravich______56-61___6___.36____11-19__________10
Bobby Roberts______62-69___8___.41____12-18___________8
Tates Locke_________70-74___5___.47____14-16__________6
Bill Foster__________75-83___9___.59____18-12__________3
Cliff Ellis___________84-93__10___.58____17-13__________4
Rick Barnes_________94-97___4___.61____18-12__________1(tie)
Larry Shyatt_________98-02___5___.46____14-16__________7
OPP_______________03-09___7___.61____18-12__________1(tie)
BB________________10-18___9___.57____17-13__________5

No Clemson coach since WW2 has averaged more than 18 normalized wins/year over their tenure. BB is at 17.
But, since the mid 70's we've been remarkably consistent at 17-18 per season except for the Shyatt debacle. Before that we were REALLY bad. As in all sports, our success will ultimately reflect the priorities of the Administration as much as the abilities of the coaches and players. It seems 12 wins was good enough from the 40s-70s. Since then, 17-18 seems good enough. Will we want more wins in the future? Time will tell.

No. Because the same administration has built the football team into the best in the land. Baseball pretty good too. Priorities.

I guess "everybody" wasn't specific enough.

It should read, "fire everybody on the list".

If they are all the same, how can we choose which one to fire?

I am in no way discontented with Clemson administration.

It was a shot at those who say firing Brownlee will solve the problem instantly.

Banks McFadden 1954 team that went 2-21. That's a long season. Of course, with Banks as coach, the team may have been practicing dribbling, shooting, and passing with a football for all we know.

Actually, Banks was the last of the "assistant football coaches" to coach basketball, Press was the first true basketball coach. Yike, it took us that long.

Does anyone know the back story on his departure? I remember he literally just up and left in the middle of the night. At the time it seemed like something REALLY p'd him off and he just said **** it. But I never heard any details at all.

While I congratulate you for normalizing based on a 30 game schedule the schedule itself is still the problem: OOC.

OP isn't #1, not close. We was basically the Big South Conference Champion as his OOC record is good, but extremely weak. Barnes is in that same grouping too, although he does have one of the best OOC wins: Kentucky in '96. That was why both OP and Barnes would be 11-0 or 14-0 and then barely make it 20 wins or .500 in conference.

It would be more interesting to normalize the ACC conference games to 18. Even with expansion you can pull a better result as all programs are considered peers (rather than see who played Coastal or Campbell the most). The expansion of the ACC has for the most part added to the upper-middle, so there isn't as much worry I think based on strength of schedule based on the round robin.
