New Story: Projected Starters: Defense

Projected Starters: Defense

Spring practice begins next week and several position battles are up in the air as the Tigers begin a month-long process that ends with the annual spring game on April 11th. Before we head into the spring and we thought it would be interesting to take a look at what we think the starting lineups on defense would look like if the season started today. Full Story »

Odaniel will start this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, he should start at SAM, when we face more conventional

Feb 27, 2015, 8:59 AM

offenses or run heavy teams. When we face spread teams, Wiggins will start and get most snaps at SAM/Nickel hybrid.

I have to say

Feb 27, 2015, 7:41 AM

I don't see a lot of drop-off here. Should still be a Top 20 Defense.

Re: I have to say

just a huge drop off in experience.

Re: I have to say

Feb 27, 2015, 8:22 AM

Experience not really look at how many snaps these kids logged. Yea they weren't there for 2 or 3 years, but they weren't just sitting on the sidelines either. They play significant snaps during the season. O'Daniel played well, very well against a run first offense in GaTech. I think he lead the team in tackles that game. Granted a lot of those guys will be first year starters, but they are not wet behind the ears. Venables will have them ready to rock in roll by Fall or have someone else
there that is.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are actually not that many first time starters

Feb 27, 2015, 8:24 AM

Reader, Watkins, Lawson, Boulware, Gooodson, Kearse, Alexander, Green have all started at least one game in their career here so that's nothing new to them.

Feb 27, 2015, 8:37 AM

You are correct, but some of the DE's will be.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

to say no dropoff short sells a lot of Tigers who just left

Feb 27, 2015, 9:00 AM [ in reply to I have to say ]

Vic, Grady, and Stephone. There is nobody on the roster anywhere like those three. There is still talent, but there is not #1 in the nation level talent. We will be top 20-25. Which is still pretty good.

Even you admit there is a drop off. From #1 to top 20 is a dropoff.

Well, even the guys that has moved on said them selves, that it wouldn't be much of a drop off from the guys behind them!!!

Well i don't think Vic or Grady were #1 in the nation when they first got here but look what they worked to.

We have ppl on the roster who will be could be better, we just have to wait and see

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

MIddle LB is going to be the toughest to replicate.

Feb 27, 2015, 11:12 AM [ in reply to to say no dropoff short sells a lot of Tigers who just left ]

Boulware is tough but pretty short which hurts zone pass defense on tosses across the middle. I don't ever see him coming close to Anthony's production against the run either. Love to seem him overachieve and prove me wrong.

Re: New Story: Projected Starters: Defense

Feb 27, 2015, 7:54 AM

Great read. Any insight on some of the incoming defensive tackles? Something tells me that Wilkins may take one of the spots.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both Wilkins and Huggins will avoid a RS. Both will play

Feb 27, 2015, 8:21 AM

I still believe that Huggins is going to be a DT sooner rather then later but they'll give him a shot at SDE first as that's what he wants to play more. Both these guys are war daddy's that tore it up in camps and in games and both will be great soon. Expect Wilkins to be the 4th DT to see the field, as Venables loves to rotate our DL as much as he can. Huggins should move into the 2 deep at SDE but that'll depend n what Austin Bryant and Ferrell do wen they sow up. Both are more natural DEs then Huggins and will push him to the DT position quickly.

Re: New Story: Projected Starters: Defense

Feb 27, 2015, 12:40 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Projected Starters: Defense ]

Wilkins and Johnson(since he is an early enrollee) may get in the rotation but Reader, Watkins and Pagano will anchor a unit that won't see much drop off. They are all experienced and will help the younger crew provide more depth.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This should be a top 20-30 D next year

Feb 27, 2015, 8:22 AM

Young talent and veteran experience in this group. Only real question I have is depth at the DE position. If Ebo, Yeargin or one of the freshmen DEs can make an impact then watch out

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This should be a top 20-30 D next year

Feb 27, 2015, 8:30 AM

Depth at DE?? You might want to go check the roster my friend.. They have about 8 deep at DE. They are all young, but its not like we will have to move LBers over to cover the position. Lawson, Dood, Ebo, Yeargin, Bryant, Register(might move over), Rogers, Ferrell, Davis. There are a lot of kids there. With a lot of talent. Venables is just chomping at the bit. Because he really only had 3 DE's last year to work with due to kids redshirting. So he has the full compliment to use this season. I wouldn't be surprised that those younger kids show out this year. With a full year of learning the system plus getting stronger in power hour, and getting more accustomed to the playbook.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll rephrase then to "Experienced Depth"

Feb 27, 2015, 9:26 AM

Right now we definitely have the bodies. However one or more of them have to step it up this year and learn quickly. I'd love for Ebo and Yeargin to be our next great pass rush specialists. And in fact I heard the staff really likes what they've seen from both of them

Re: This should be a top 20-30 D next year

Feb 27, 2015, 9:32 AM [ in reply to Re: This should be a top 20-30 D next year ]

I agree we should be a Top 20 defense next year, and yes that will be a drop off from last year. But I am hoping two things happen to help us out. Last season our front 7 was so dominant that our backs didn't have to be as good and experienced. This year it's the opposite so I'm hoping our numbers stay similar because our back will make it even harder on offenses and our front 7 will develop as the season goes along. The other thing is that last season we depended on our defense to win games for us because our offense was struggling due to so many injuries. Hopefully the injury "bug" won't be quite as bad and our offense will be so dominant we won't need to be the number one defense in the country.

As far as positions and players. I agree with most all of that. DE is definitely the most questioned position. I think Lawson will play some of both SDE and WDE. just depends on who is opposite of him. Ebo and Yeargin can play WDE. Lawson, Dodd, and I believe that Huggins will get some snaps at SDE. The only other player that I would not be surprised that if ends up started by the beginning of the season is Korie Rogers. I thing his potential is through the roof. I hope I am right.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i see it around 35ish which is more

Feb 27, 2015, 1:21 PM

Than fine if our offense is as explosive as some expect and watson stays healthy. I think scores resemble more of the 2012-2013 seasons than 2014.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree...

Mar 1, 2015, 6:25 AM [ in reply to This should be a top 20-30 D next year ]

A consistent pass rush threat from the DE position will be key. In a year or two, if not sooner; I would expect/hope that Wilkins and/or Huggins to be legitimate pass rush threats from DT position.

Feb 27, 2015, 9:11 AM

What ever happened to Ebo? (Ebenezer Ogundeko)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He'll see the field a lot this year imo

Feb 27, 2015, 9:28 AM

He came in having to learn a lot about technique and leverage, etc

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Scott Pagano

Feb 27, 2015, 9:19 AM

Nuff said. The way Brooks talked about how hard it was to keep him off the field last year, I feel like we will hear about him early in this spring ball. Have any of you students seen him around on campus lately. I'm thinking that with two years in a college weight room, the guy should look like the Hulk. I'm hoping he will be a defensive star this year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pagano may very well snag one of the starting DTs spots

Feb 27, 2015, 9:30 AM

He's that good. Kid is all energy and motor and has a mean streak a mile long. He's going to play and play alot imo. One thing he still needs work on that I saw was his use of hands and leverage. When he did it right be moved opposing OGs with ease. When he got to far up right they got under him and moved him around
