So I’ve recently dusted off a desktop that is the better part of a decade old. It was top of the line when I bought it. Now I need it for work.

Question:

How can I tell if it’ll support multiple monitors? Is there an easy way of figuring this out? It’s a gateway (told you it was old). I still will have to update to Windows 10, but no use if it doesn’t support multiple monitors.

I know they’re relatively cheap nowadays, but I’m just as cheap. The pc still looks brand new and has barely been used. I want to make this one work...

Check and see if it has an eSATA port. You can just

plug in your zip drive and daisy chain from the back of that to your monitor.

How many HDMI and/or VGA ports do you have?***

Re: How many HDMI and/or VGA ports do you have?***

Jun 15, 2020, 1:22 PM

It has one HDMI port (not connected to anything) and the vga port to the monitor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That doesn't sound ideal, like maybe that only has

Jun 15, 2020, 1:26 PM

one video card. You can try plugging a TV into the HDMI port and see what happens.

So you’re think maximum of two monitors or do you think it would just display the same screen on both monitors?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Software drives that - I think - if both monitors can run

Jun 15, 2020, 1:42 PM

at the same time, then you just need to let Windows know you are extending the desktop vs. duplicating

Have you tried unplugging it, and then plugging it back in

again?

badge-ringofhonor-clemsonsteve02.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Check the monitors first

Jun 15, 2020, 12:57 PM

Use an spare wire laying around (or a wire coat hanger). Take one end and push it into the monitor plug. Take the other end of the coat hanger and push it into the electrical outlet.

Matter fact, you'll probably need to check the coat hanger first. Try holding it barehanded and pushing it 3 inches deep into the outlet.

Hold on just a minute there, fella. He's going to get

Jun 15, 2020, 1:02 PM

electrocuted if he uses his bare hand. Best to hold the wire with an insulated glove, and then use his tongue to test the current. The saliva will provide a thin barrier against any shock.

badge-ringofhonor-clemsonsteve02.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thin layer? Not good enough. Maybe he should instead try

Jun 15, 2020, 1:05 PM

shoving it in his anus. The ### hairs will be a thicker layer of insulation than saliva.

Better go at least 8 inches deep to really be sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

8 whole inches?

Jun 15, 2020, 1:30 PM

I’m not trying to set any records here...

Don't even start if you don't plan on whole assing it.

Also, you can fire up unit up and see what graphics card it has in there and then see if it supports multiple monitors...but the ports on the back of the card will normally be the true tell.

I’ll have to start it up and see. It was sitting so long that the internal battery went dead so I had to go through the cmos setup screen.

just get a splitter

Jun 15, 2020, 1:16 PM

you can split the video into 2,4, or 20 monitors

Re: just get a splitter

Jun 15, 2020, 1:25 PM

But doesn’t your graphics card or something have to be capable of it first?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's how I do it for one of my directv dvrs

Jun 15, 2020, 1:35 PM

split it and run the output to multiple tvs

Obviously, you will only be able to watch the same channel on all the tvs

I don't think that is what you want for your computer, if you have a VGA and HDMI output, you SHOULD be able to have 2 separate outputs if you wanted
