Have You Ever Ridden a Pine Tree?

Sep 2, 2019, 3:06 PM

Don't laugh. I'm serious. When I was writing my post re the Eye of a Hurricane and mentioned the long leaf yellow pine, I remembered one of the fun things we did as kids. The long leaf yellow pine is flexible as a young tree. We would select a tree about 15 - 20 feet tall, climb as high as we could and make the tree bend with our weight. We would gently come down to the ground. I don't ever recall one of the trees breaking. It was a fun thing, did not cost a thing and the trees were plentiful. The one thing we tried to avoid was skinning the bark. The trees had a lot of resin and if our clothing came in contact with the resin it was difficult to remove.

Did it many times Joe. We did not have Long Leaf but Loblolly and they would break causing painful falls.

Skinning a cat on an upstate mill hill was pulling u on a horizonal limb and cutting a flip back through your arms (does that make sense ? )

Many, many times. Grew up in a house in the middle of a long leaf pine grove. Great memories.

We used to climb persimmon trees up in the woods and have persimmon wars from tree to tree. The green ones hurt. The ripe ones were just nasty.

There was an old joke about a guy breaking his arm while eating breakfast, he fell out of a persimmon tree.

I did it as a young teenager Mr. Joe . It was always an exciting weekend distraction around Berkeley County.
