Has Clemson Ever Had a "Power Back"?
Posted: Oct 22, 2020, 6:26 PM

When I think power back I'm thinking:
**6'1 or more. 220 lbs. or more is the specific body type I would consider a power back.
Earl Campbell Eddie George John Riggins Jamal Lewis Mike Alstott Larry Csonka(never saw him just video) Marshawn Lynch Herschel Walker Lindale White
Or more currently Derrick Henry! I have been watching Clemson and went to a few camps back in the late 80's for years! I can't recall having that particular "body type" at RB.
It would be just "murderous" for Clemson the way it is built to have a big bruising RB that was just dragging dudes! It's bad enough they can't tackle TE9( how many broken tackles does he have)? You would almost feel bad for a defense that would likely be gassed trying to cover the speed we could present at WR, the power and speed TE9 could present. Then just get to leaning on wobbly kneed defenses! It would be a slaughter!
Just wondering if we haven't or if just can't recall! Thanks in advance!

I forgot about Emory Smith! Yep!
Christian would have been an interesting choice on some 3rd and 2 plays! I am having trouble remembering the other guys - though I am currently looking them up!
Thanks! 74TIGER

Didn't Emory run for about 300 yards in 4th quarter vs coots? Sure seemed like 300 yards at least, but admittedly I may have had too many beers during that game.
And Raymond Priester is obvious recent RB. Sure was fun watching/listening to him play back then.

Marvin Simms! After the '77 SC game and Butler's Catch, I ran out on the field dodging batteries, water bottles and No Cigar Today t-shirts. Here comes Marvin and he jumps into the air and I catch him in a bear hug! Thought I was gonna buckle. After the Gator Bowl loss to Pitt we go by the team hotel and happen to share a beer or two with Marvin!

Dang, you have to be a bigum yourself. I went to the Orange Bowl that year we played Pitt(Matt Cavanaugh QB) in the Gator. When we flew over the Gator Bowl the next day, I looked down and we were still trying to score! ??

Priester was good! I kind of had him as more of a speed back! But, I guess he fits that mold now that I think of it.
Ya'll remember Kenny Flowers? I use to love his running style. I use to try and emulate it when we played sandlot. My brother, "stop trying to be Kenny Flowers" LOL!
He was a smaller back though!

It’s hard for me to believe that anyone who was paying attention to Clemson football in the ‘80s has to ask if we’ve ever had a power back. Seriously? ??

My memory says that he was tackled for a loss (maybe on a 4th and 1) late on the game in our 13-9 loss to usc jr in 1979. His ONLY tackle for a loss.

Non Clemson my favorite RB ever was Jerome Bettis. Best Power Back of all-time.
As far as Clemson goes, I considered Nealon Greene to be a great Powerback....

He was supposed to be the next Herschel Walker. He had a decent freshman year at Texas A&M, and then Danny accepted him as a transfer. He lasted a year at Clemson, and Danny said he would never accept another transfer. Danny was true to his word. Smith was the epitome of “looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane”.

Yes back in the day Frank Howard always had power backs - they were called Fullbacks and were usually bigger than the tackles. Short Yardage it was fullback off guard.

Ha, y'all are so young! YES - one of the greatest players of all time - FRED CONE - was a power back (full back) in the early fifties. His name is on the Ring of Honor. Every time we needed yardage for a first down, for example, Fred would get it. To me, he was one of the best ever. I think he lives in Senaca??? To everyone's amazement, he ended up as a kicker for the Packers. He was #31. Fred was so instrumental in some of the Clemson's wins. Coach Howard loved Fred. He had never played football until he got to Clemson. He was from Alabama, and Howard tried him om his sister's recommendation, "I think he would make a good football player."
