Hardwoods under kitchen cabinets or no?

Don't really see the point in having flooring under cabinets. Any advantages either way or suggestions?

for the amount of wood, may as well.

the floor goes down before the cabinets, and would be hard for two different installers to match that up. There's got to be some floor the same height as the hardwood under the cabinets...

We do because we installed floors before cabinets.

If we ever changed our minds about cabinet placement, the floors are already there and we won’t have to try to make them look uniform.
But who changes cabinets? This is our 3rd set in two different houses, so yes. We might change our cabinets one day...again.
Also there if we change appliances. Same with vanities in the bathrooms. Probably around $300 in wood covered by cabs, pantry, and vanities. So it’s not like a fortune.

Height I'm not so concerned about, but what do you mean by spills and moisture damage? You saying no to hardwoods in kitchen at all? I thought the same but seems to be a common trend nowadays. I'm willing to caulk below windows, fridge and dishwasher area to add another layer of protection if needs be. I really don't want variations in height between floors or different colored wood and wood-look vinyl. I also don't want tile in the kitchen. Don't want to deal with keeping grout clean, worrying about cracks and the unforgiving nature of tile.

If you had a water leak you would have to pull the cabinets if you have floors under them. I advise DO NOT install flooring underneath cabinetry. It is not a common practice in the building industry and not worth the extra time, effort, and money. Save that extra flooring for if you need to replace a board or build on

It's completely common practice here, both commerical and residential. Floor covers the entire room and millwork/cabinetry goes on top. If not, any future changes will require flooring replacement to.

There's too many things that can go wrong, especially with hardwood floors, that warrant flooring being installed after cabinets. It's just way too easy to mess them up with dents/dings/scrapes. I don't know of a builder around here that installs flooring before cabinets

That would make sense. It's going to be a small fortune so don't want to damage my investment.

Even if you put the flooring (wood or not) under the cabinets, the surface will be different should the cabinet footprint change. Wear and tear will see to that so you would likely have to refloor/refinish anyway.
If the cabinets are placed directly on the subfloor, the big negative is that you will lose part of the veritical kick space. Be sure your kick is at least four inches so you can have the standard 3-4 inch height in the kick. The big plus is savings. You also will have an easier time should you elect to replace the flooring.
There are ceramic tiles available now that give a really good appearance of hardwood. We elected to get the 6" x 2' kind that looks and feels like hand scraped hardwood. Nice texture that approximates woodgrain very well. Easy upkeep and the finish lasts better than wood. Also, very affordable.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

If the footprint changes its really not hard at all to lay down more wood flooring.
