Hardest part of having step kids

is the alternate parent. MFer has a daughter who is a brilliant swimmer and a so-so student. But when she's swimming her self confidence peaks and it helps tremendously with her grades. But last season she was having shoulder pain at the end of season, so we (as in not the MFer) take her to a pediatric sports ortho who says there isn't anything wrong with the joint, it's just from a combo of over use and not warming up enough before races.
Dad now telling her she shouldn't swim this season (despite shoulder being fine now) so she won't "permanently mess up her shoulder" Meanwhile, she's gone from talking about getting in the pool ahead of formal practice in a month to wondering if she might mess up her shoulder. She's also a great singer and we just started her in guitar lessons, so I can't to see how he manages to #### on that.
This girl struggles with self-esteem and every time we find something that helps her build it, he ##### on it.

together. Was zero (0) (nada) (zip) help to his 2 kids when they went to college. I could go back and talk about the head games he laid on them when they were little, but I won't. I had to be semi-polite to him when they were little, but once they were old enough to know the score, that stopped. Funny, I'm the one now that gets the calls for advice. He did teach them how NOT to manage their money. Problem is, I still have to see him occasionally at those kid's events, like my grandson's b-day party, etc. - he's still their dad. Whatever, he'll burn in hel1 when his time comes.

just doesn't care enough to learn that for the most part, raising kids isn't about what you want for yourself (adulation, praise, respect, friendship, etc.) it's about what you want from them, making sure they are grown enough to make it on their own when they leave.
