Semper Fi!

That's me on the left (kind of fuzzy) with a plug of tobacco standing with my Company Commander almost 50 years to the day in the Republic of Viet Nam. You may notice my Clemson ring in the other photo!

Love me some Marines. I was USAF, but my best friend while on active duty was a Sergeant Major in the Marines assigned to a Reserve unit nearby. I was not a pilot but have to admit Navy pilots as a whole were bolder than AF pilots, but none were crazier than the Marine pilots both while flying and especially while flying high in the O club. We had a lot of Tri service folks at our base. Happy Birthday Marines. Thank you for doing so much heavy lifting for our country!

You are right Ron. I was stationed for a year at MCAS in Beaufort for my last tour of active duty. I was out of my element in the air wing as a combat engineer, but I will have to say spending time at the O Club with the Marine aviators was an different kind of adventure!

The carrier landings in the O club were spectacular.

LOL ..... you are correct ..... carrier landings were spectacular! Clear the tables boys!

Honoring their comrades who were killed during a flight was also interesting ...... and not too reverent at the O Club ..... and we had three of them while I was at Beaufort ..... one pilot and two NFOs ..... all great guys. One of them was on their last flight before getting out of the Corps.

Yep. The cost of freedom is definitely not free. I think most of us have no idea how many of our fighting force are killed in training. I was the medical officer of the day one day when an F-16 went down near our base. The pilot stayed with the aircraft to take it away from a civilian area. I learned that day why the pilots had their footprints recorded. Hats off to all our warriors!
