Replaced sprinkler system control panel this AM

May 23, 2020, 12:04 PM

Think it was victim to the freezer or the outlet. Either way. Thought it would be complicated. Took 15 minutes, and that includes reprogramming it. Heck, was easier than replacing the GFCI outlet. Dreading the day a valve goes bad because the valve box is buried somewhere and I haven't a clue where. I was shown it when we first moved in. It was then summarily covered by pinestraw, bushes were planted, and it is lost. I'm 90% sure I know within 10 feet where it is. Maybe, I think.

I've done it twice in 2 houses

Got.the Rachio smart controller. Saves a ton of money. And yes, pretty easy to replace.

Is this it?

Just happened to be looking at the one at my brother’s house yesterday. I think he is due for an upgrade.

Wow. He should keep that one.

Probably one of the early ones they actually made to last.

Last time he checked it

few years ago, it worked like a champ. He hasn’t run his system for a while because he has some broken lines from one thing or another. Looking to get everything repaired and working again, and knowing him he will want a new controller.

Man, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

My parents original one looked just like that one. It lasted 20+ years. Eventually they had a bad lightening strike. Replaced it. None lasted more than 5 years.

They had a 1978 Sears garage door opener too. Lasted until 2014. Now they don't last 10 years hardly.

Parents had a 1978 Carrier AC unit. Lasted until 2003. Between 2005 and 2014 they went through two replacement AC units.

Got a 1990 fridge in the garage, works like a champ. Got a fancy Samsung inside that's been repaired 2 times in 8 years. Inlaws have a 1940 refrigerator that works fine. My dad had a 1936 Westinghouse fridge that lasted until 2003.

Mom still uses her mother's 1970's washing machine. I've been through three.

Stick with the early versions that were built to last. Stuff is cheap these days, or at least built cheaply.

This was my first time. I was a virgin.

Was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. Usually something is 20 times harder than it looks. This was 10 times easier. Pulled the plate off the old one, took a pic with the phone. Unscrewed the wires, took it off the wall, re-installed the wiring per the pic from phone, boom. 10 minutes, maybe 15 including reprogramming it.

I fully expect a valve replacement to suck, just finding the valve box will suck alone.

One of these ( or one like it ) might help to find the wiring to the box;

Cha-Ching. +15% home resale value.***

Had a sprinkler system. Control panel just dieded.

May 23, 2020, 1:25 PM

But if a $65 control panel installed in 15 minutes adds 15% to the resale, I'm all for it.
