Can anyone really prepare?

Sometimes I think a true pandemic is just something humanity would have to ride out and hope for the best.

I agree. What are we supposed to do?

Stockpile masks and drugs for years on end, for something that may never happen? Build and equip thousands of hospitals in preparation of something that may or may not ever occur?
For everyone that runs around screaming like their hair is on fire "WE AREN'T PREPARED!!1!" what exactly should have we been doing since the plague to get ready?

Go down to the supermarket, buy a case of Corona, and drink one every time the media runs a hit piece on Trump for “not being ready”. You’ll need another case for tomorrow.

Of course you can prepare. The government has to have plans on place to test, to move resources, to coordinate messaging.
The reason government response to a pandemic matters is that the slower the infection spreads, the less the strain on our medical resources. If it peaks fast, hospitals will be overwhelmed, treatment will be scarce, and mortality will be higher.
How can you honestly think there's no way to prepare? I see this place hasn't gotten any better in the last few months.

How can you have plans in place to test for a new virus? You’d have to know the virus strand before it exists? Not all diseases will show the same symptoms or have the same incubation period or mode of entry. Each one has its own challenges. To say we simply should be prepared is like saying we should prepare to stop all forms of new cancers tomorrow. That’s not realistic. And you can’t have medical resources stockpiled in a basement somewhere. Everything in healthcare has an expiration date and medical supplies are outrageously expensive. Who’s paying for those supplies? Who eats the cost when they’re not used? All healthcare systems have to have a disaster response plan. Hospitals have a hard enough time reigning in hospital acquired infections, let alone a virus that could spread like wildfire amongst the public. As prepared as people would like to be, there are some things out of human control (novel thought I know). Just wait till we get a meteor the size of Texas headed this way so we can blamestorm whatever scapegoat may be sitting in office.

Jesus. No one said someone just snaps their fingers and everything appears. We've known about this for weeks now.

You need way way more than weeks and I think you’re missing my point. Mainly, the last few sentences. I don’t doubt someone out there is constructing a ferocious biological weapon that’d be much more deadly than this virus. But even knowing that, there’s no way to ‘prepare’ for something of that magnitude. You’re at nature’s mercy.

You honestly think governments and businesses are pouring billions into preparing for something that's impossible to prepare for? Is it possible to be that stupid or are you just trying to defend Trump?

Take it from someone in healthcare...you clearly don’t know jack #### about what you’re blabbering about. Judging from your pulse, I take it that happens frequently with you on this board? Is this part of your routine here? Stanley, is that you? Do you elect defense on the coin toss?

There are plans in place... They are just now being followed

"Medical applies are outrageously expensive" because of an out-of-control for-profit 'industry' that has a captive clientele without an alternative. Masks and other preventatives could be stockpiled for years by the government. The entire 'industry' is run on a bottom line get-what-you-can attitude with the exception of the doctors, nurses and healthcare specialists, though even some of those have fallen into it.
Pandemic preparedness has been a mainstay of the CDC for decades until it adjusted to the cuts. Now those cuts are showing up as a BIG mistake. The response time on this was pathetic. As a country, we missed "the first hour"...

I agree with over priced medical equipment, but that issue would have to be addressed before stockpiling medical equipment. I haven’t seen anything in our department that has an expiration of no more than maybe two years at most. Use outdated supplies that are no longer considered sterile and wait till a class action lawsuit gets thrown around because patients are getting ‘sick’ from your care. Are we to buy stock every few years? And then what kind of supplies? Masks? What if it is another outbreak similar to West Nile? What good are masks going to do when the disease is spread by a vector? This is what I was saying...there’s no way to prepare for every possible scenario unless we want to dump billions into a ‘just in case’ stash that will routinely need to be replenished or may be of no use. Our healthcare already wastes somewhere around $800 billion in medical supplies annually. Do we really trust the government to spend that kind of money frugally? There isn’t much blame to go around here. No more than there would be with a tornado, hurricane, tsunami, meteor, etc... it wasn’t long ago Trump was criticized for trying to preemptively evacuate parts of Florida for a hurricane. But of course, he was harshly criticized for going against the experts. He can’t win, and I get it. People hate him and I don’t judge them for their feelings in regards to his person and policies. But this is getting out of hand and frankly ridiculous. This is no time for partisan politics.

That is from Time so it's fake. It just perpetuates the hoax invented by Dems and liberal media. People aren't really dying. They're faking death to try to bring down Trump!
