Google snoops on Gmail to catch pedophiles

Aug 15, 2014, 10:28 AM

http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/14/technology/enterprise/gmail-pedophiles/index.html?iid=HP_River

"[T]hat does not necessarily mean that we review content, so please don't assume that we do," Google adds.

Wow. It doesn't NECESSARILY mean they review content, and they would appreciate it if we didn't think too much about it.

Is this debate over? Have we chosen "security" over "freedom"? Or is the distinction between "freedom" and "privacy" sufficient enough to allow for this and not see it as counter to freedom?

Quick Shout-Out to Roy at the NSA. Hope the kids are doing well.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

So? Google has the right to not host child #### on their servers. When an attachment is sent it sent to Google servers at which point a hash of the file (a finger print) is made, this is used mostly to make sure the file isn't corrupted, at the same time they can use this hash to compare it with known hashes of chile #### images. They aren't actually checking out the 100 of millions of email boxes they host.

Also they have been doing this for years, they scan emails for keywords so they can deliver targeted ads. Don't like it use a different email company.

How much privacy, if any, we can expect to have in our emails?

Courts have found otherwise, and protected the confidentiality of information transmitted through email.

I guess I'm asking whether we should want laws protecting the privacy of emails.

your anonymity flies out the window when you are suspected of a crime. And certainly "looking for pedophiles" is not going to get a lot of blow back from the public due to the nature of the crime.
