I played until the 10th grade, but I was extremely poor, so I had to work and go to school. I did manage to run Track in the 10th, but had to quit after that year.

I played pick-up football until I was 32 and moved to Chattanooga and could not find anyone to play there, so I quit and took up tennis. :)

But I love football. Can't wait to tell all the coaches how...oh wait..

I didn't enjoy playing football, even though I played every year I was able to. I played baseball year round and I loved it. If I could go back I would not have played football and focused all of my energy on baseball. I feel football workouts and practice really took time away from baseball. During football season I would practice football all week. And on the weekends my baseball team would travel all over Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and SC and play. So needless to say it burned me out.

Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state.

Barely lost the state title as one of the best passers in state HS history. Went on to play at Tennessee, set a few SEC records but went undrafted.

Later on, tried my hand at playing in the NFL. Did some practice squad duty and got called up for a few games. I threw a couple of interceptions in a game and really that was my only shot.

I don't regret making several hundred grand, but if I could go back in time I'd play for Tommy Bowden.

Was on the HS team from 1936 - 38. Can't remember but believe football had already been invented. I was mostly the practice dummy at right end. Broken collar bone, injury from hard cleats and multiple abrasions were the gifts that kept on giving. My claim to fame as a self-appointed football expert can be summed up in two short sentences, "I don't know" and "I didn't know that".

HS football then hung it up. Played LG and Strong Safety, as well as KO and KR teams. No way A 5'9" 155 pound dude is gonna compete at Clemson I thought, especially since I was only good at swatting a ball down not catching it LOL.

I loved the game but there's a big part of me that wishes I had only ever watched from the stands. I'm in my mid-40's and have already given too much money to the Spine Institute for injections into discs in both my neck and back, and arthritis in right knee and elbow, both injured. My old man played for Coach Howard, knee injury ended his playing days while he was wearing the Orange. He's got 2 new knees and a new right shoulder now.. it's hard on the body.

My son is 14 and could easily be great on the FB field, but we haven't pushed him to it. He loves watching the Tigers, kinda glad he's content with homework and computers instead of tackling.

I played football and soccer in high school. Wofford took a brief look at me as a LB but didn't offer once they realized I was about a 5-flat-40 guy.

Played a year of college soccer but didn't see the field much except in garbage time. 240-pound ex-linebackers who run 5-flat-40's really don't make particularly good college soccer players either.

I'm also a nationally licensed USSF soccer coach. I've coached state-level Academy kids, and a couple of school teams.

High school and one year of semi pro. Thought I was the greatest player ever, but looking back, I was only average at best. If I had it to do all over, if I wasn't going to be any good at it, I would never have played and focused on being a better student and would have went to college out of high school. Maybe then at least my knees, and back wouldn't be so unforgiving. Oh yeah, and at least one concussion and I haven't entertained the idea of suicide yet. Not meaning that to be funny, I just think that everyone that gets their bell rung is going to have problems in the future.

As an American growing up in Brasil, I grew up playing 'futebol' ... my first game with a Brasilian adult company team was when I was a guest player at 15 and scored a hat-trick. :)

4 years of varsity in High School, All-Star, Captain, etc. ... arrived at Clemson to play soccer in the late 70s and found out that everyone else had been an All-Star, Captain (Haha) .. PLUS we had players from the Nigerian and Jamaican National Team pools and some English players.

I played at Clemson for 3 years and, for lack of playing time, gave it up ... I've regretted not sticking it out -- still gnaws at me. (Dabo, if you need someone to talk to the kids grinding it out every day and not seeing the field, let me know -- I'll be happy to pass on my life lesson ...) :(

Having grown up abroad, I was red-shirted in college and didn't know what that meant -- thought I had done something wrong. :D In spring practice my freshman year at Clemson, scored 7 goals over 5 days of scrimmages and thought I would be in line for a lot of playing time, but sat the bench, lost my confidence ... should have, but never had a heart-to-heart with Coach Ib.

Played on club teams for years after college, coached Select Club and High School. Moved to Switzerland for a few years ... captained and was high scorer on our company team. Season ticket holder for Atlanta United FC!!

What an awesome topic. Really interesting to see the responses. I played from age 6-12 on some pretty decent rec league teams. Even played for a county championship which was a big deal in rec leagues back in the 80's. Going into our 7th grade year our MS coach who also coached at our HS pulled a few of us aside and mentioned wanting to take us to the HS with him to learn about weight lifting to get us ready for JV in a few years. We were on top of the world.

Unfortunately for me I lost it all one Saturday afternoon playing grab a%$% with some friends at a local fall festival. I ran between 2 parked cars and into the side of a passing car. Instead of going over the hood and into the windshield I was pulled under the car. I suffered a tib/fib compound fracture. The tire nearly ripped my foot off. I was 12 and never fully gained my strength, ability to walk/run or courage again until I was 16 and tried out for our HS baseball team. I made the team but wasn't really any good anymore. I laugh and say baseball is my wife but football is the mistress I couldn't have. I miss it everyday.

Luckily, I've had the privilege to coach baseball, basketball, softball & football at the rec league level. My son's football team won the county championship last year and we lost our state championship 8-0. I'm very thankful God spared my life that day in 1985 but a part of my did die that day. A wide eyed kid that loved to run and play. Makes me really sad sometimes but I still have it better than others. Go Tigers!

I played at Clemson. Never a starter, though I was a scholarship athlete.

I would have loved to have been good enough to even walk on, let alone on scholarship. You guys that were that good, don' t know how envious I am. It would be some kinda special to tell my grandson, yep, I played for The Tigers. Hopefully, one day, he will play for them.

It is very special to have been on a Tiger team, even as a scrub. You do learn a lot about the game and about self sacrifice for a team goal and what it really takes to succeed on the field. It has helped me very much in my business career, as well. I wouldn't trade the experience, and I still get chills and a little emotional when I see them run down "The Hill" (something that Hootie didn't let us do, until, I believe it was our (and his) last game).

Would you remember Oscar Carter and Jewell MaClaurin? As I recall they started their careers with Coach Howard and ended them with Hootie. Two of the old time home town guys.

Seeing how I am one of the few females who frequent Tnet, my answer is that I never played football. ;)

High School

2 years. The workouts sucked all joy out of it, and I never really liked it. It didn't help that I sucked. I ended up wrestling Varsity throughout High School and running Cross Country.

I, personally, played in high school. However, I have no idea how to give you a percentage of us who did or did not. One caveat. I played at a small high school in South Carolina and graduated in 1964. Everybody was white back then. I never played with or against a single African American. Kind of gave me an edge. I also lettered in basketball. Now THAT would have never happened today.

Football history

Aug 5, 2017, 12:28 PM

Grew up in a very small SC town.
Played from the day they let me on the field in rec league through the 10th grade. Over that span, played every position except QB. Father hated the high school coach with a passion so put me to work in a cotton mill half shift after school junior and senior years.
At 5' 9" about 150lbs, wasn't destined for college ball anyway, although I do regret not playing the last two years in high school.
Had a friend playing JV ball at Clemson my freshman year (yeah... long time ago). He had to go through the weight room once and I went along. When I saw those guys I was absolutely convinced that college football was never meant for me.
Go Tigers!!
