The UGA or Packer's G?

Feb 4, 2013, 6:49 PM

I just moved to Middle Georgia this year and I'm still getting used to the G on everyone's truck being for Georgia and not the Packers.

Can someone tell me who started using the G first?

The elongated "G" design that Georgia currently uses was introduced at the start of Vince Dooley’s first season as coach in 1964.

Prior to that, UGa wore silver helmets to match their silver britches with a square G was affixed to the side of the silver helmets.

When Dooley arrived, he wanted a new look. His first change was to can the silver britches in favor of white pants (Dooley would re-introduce the silver britches in 1980).

As the story goes, the wife of one of Dooley's assistant coaches was an art teacher. Dooley asked her to create a new helmet design. The “new look” helmets she created were red with the new black elongated “G” logo in a white oval on each side.

The elongated “G” which Dooley liked because it was forward-looking, and was inspired by the helmet design worn by the Green Bay Packers, who gave their blessing to Georgia’s design. It was also Dooley who made the final decision to go with red helmets instead of white.
