what this story does a poor job explaining is that it was after Lyndon Johnson's push for civil rights that the enraged southern evangelicals flocked into the waiting and open arms of the Republican party. The parties may have swapped demographics, but it is still the same group of superstitious country bumpkin bigots inhabiting this lunatic fringe.

however the politicians stayed put. They had a guaranteed influx of voters
voting democrat just because of the party name, it was a windfall. It was
strong through the 80s and 90s and has only recently declined. There's still
many democrat politicians that are racist as hell, they just keep it hidden
better now.

By far the most racist relative, by marriage, I have served in the 70s and 80s
in SC running as a democrat. He knew he didn't have the votes to run
republican.

It makes no difference if LBJ was a racist or not (a question from a dude that never answers questions), he ramrodded the Kennedy civil rights actions through Congress and some of the best legislation since Lincoln. The dudes who question this are just peeing into the wind and they know it. It is the inception of the tea party's present philosophy which has abounded for years,. Go Tigers, don't be stubborn like politicians are.
